large cities, as well as in th e

during the coming holiday season.

been enjoying Ihe m ost w ide­
sp read caroling, m ean to expand
th e ir p lans for ihe com ing C h rist­
inas. Among those cities are De­
tro it. Chicago, P hiladelphia. Bos­
ton, St Louis, Los Angeles. Denver.
Dayton. Ohio, and F lint. Michigan.
In o rd er to help oth er large cities
to em ulate th e exam ple of these the
N ational B ureau for th e A dvance­
m ent of Music has ju st Issued a
pam phlet concerning tw o of the
lead ers In ihe m ovement Chicago |

chorus w hich th e league hopes to
have train ed In u n its for th e c a ro l­
ing program . It la expected in ad-
diton to have a m unicipal C h rist­
m as tree and a q u a rte t of tru m p e t­
ers playing from a high elevation
at Independence S q u are preceding
the appearance of the chorus. It
is also expected to have old W elsh
caro ls sung by a W elsh choir.
The caroling at F lin t, Michigan,
is a fea tu re of a yuletide festival of
song which extends from th e week
before C hristm as to th e Sunday
afte r with "The M essiah’’ p rese n t­
ed by the Com m unity chorus.
Each year the cities and tow ns
which have th e caro lin g m ake a re ­
port of th a t fact to th e N ational
Bureau for use in its survey of the
y ea r’s observance. T he la tte r is
carried on with g re a t care, in order
th a t no p articip atin g tow n may be
neglected.
A g re a t deal of th e sp read of the
m ovement has been due to th e
availability of con sid erab le prin ted
m atter on th e subject. F or in­
stance. th e B ureau supplies, upon
request, not only its g en eral pam ­
phlet on caro lin g hut p a tte rn s of a
c a ro le r's cape and cap for use of
special groups of "w a its" or carol
singers. A nother source of sim ilar
inform ation is th e P layground and
R ecreation A ssociation of A m erica
which d istrib u tes w ith o u t ch arg e
a list of C hristm as plays and m usic
and w hich in its "T h e C hristm as
Book” provides d irectio n s for o r­
ganizing
C hristm as
program s,
plays, p arties, revels and a c a rn i­
val of c a ro ls In song and tableaux.
G resham observed th e custom of
C hristm as caroling la st C hristm as
and on several previous occasions.
It is proud to he one of th e 2000
cities and tow ns referred to above.
It is w orth much to a com m unity
to have a sp irit of appreciation
th a t leads to such an observance.
The choir leaders have been
urged to a rra n g e for th e ir sin g ers
to unite in a plan of covering the
city and com m unity w ith groups of
sin g ers on C h ristm as eve.
T h ere w ere m any responses and
indications of ap p reciatio n on the
p a rt of homes w here ca ro lers sang
last C hristm as. T he most ap p ro ­
p riate recognition is to light up a

when baked with H aw aiian pine­
apple. Use slices of ham one inch
thick. They m u st be soaked in
w arm w ater for at least an hour be­
fore using. Then d rain them and
sp rin k le w ith flour. Melt a little
fa t in th e baking pan and brow n
th e ham in it. T hen pour a cup of
crushed or grated pineapple and a
half cup of w ater over each slice of
ham and bake slow ly un til tender,
probably an hour. Remove to p la t­
te r and pour the rem ain d er of the
pineapple around It.
