W hy do old people keep rig h t on
w orking, with ra re exceptions,
even a fte r th e necessity of e a rlie r
yeais Is past? Why don’t they take
the years beyond 50 or 60 for rest,
travel, reading or play?
A fter a man is 50 he should not
have anything on his mind hut
hair, says someone. But at th a t
age m any men haven’t even th a t on
their m inds unless It is In an effort
to retrieve
the
loss
suffered
through w orry.
The rensoifs for a continued de
votion to life’s activities are m ain
ly twofold, w here the absolute
necessity has ceased. They are
habit add pleasure.
Most elderly people who a re In
good health have become so a c
custom ed to toll of some useful
kind that they are quite lost w ith
out It The mind and the muscles
seem to dem and the accustom ed
activity.
The other reason Is it Is pleas-
urenble. T here Is Joy in service
for those who have lived, and ure
living, with some w orthy and c h e r
ished object In life. It | H a way of
doing good and earning money
with which to aid some w orthy
cause. And rest is alw ays sw eeter
when It follows useful labor.
T here are other reasons th a t
probably ac tu ate some, such as se t
ting a good exam ple for the young
er generation, providing
added
com forts tor loved ones, insuring
one’s self again st Incompetency
and dependence.
“ Dad. why don't you q u it?’’ says
the young man to his elderly fa th
er or grandfather. But dad hates
to give up, th in k s he can still he
useful, enjoys work and finds
much to do. Why should he quit?

F ran k O. Lowden, ex-governor of

Pointing out the general recogni
tion of the necessity of overhauling
the governm ental m achinery. Mr
Lowden declared th a t one of th
greaiest faults In the organisation
at W ashington la the failure to fol

those activities relatin g to a com

ment. In addition, legislative and
Judicial boards, outside or d e p a rt

m inistrativ e functions by congress,
Which Increases the growing com
plexity nod Irresponsibility of ad
m inistration. as, for Instance, the
in te rsta te Com m erce Commission.
