1. W ll.l. AITI.Y MODERN BUSINESS METHODS
CLAY 8. MORSE Is a p ractical business man.
He founded the tra n sfe r and sto rag e business of
Clay 8. Morse, Inc., in P o rtlan d in 1906 and
through his m anagem ent It developed into one of
the biggest co n cern s of its kind on the Pacific
Coast. Recently *his com pany w as consolidated
w ith an o th er big tra n s fe r and sto rag e concern
of P ortland.
He has p articip ated in m any public activities,
most im p o rtan t of w hich has been in connection
w ith th e cham ber of Com m erce, of w hich he has
been tre a s u re r since 1923. H is know ledge of
tlnance and m odern business m ethods will be
invaluable In th e service of M ultnomah county.
With Clay 8. Morse on the County Commission,
such a situation as the recen tly discovered "d is
ap p e aran c e” of $175,000 of In te rsta te Highway
bridge funds would he inconceivable. This sum
was taken from th e bridge Tund and diverted to
oth er uses. If elected. Mr. Morse will favor th e
re tu rn of th is am ount w here It rig h tfu lly belongs.
2. FAVOUR BETTER MARKET ROADS
CLAY 8. MORSE advocates th e m aintenance
In p ro p er Condition of all existing m arket and
la te ra l roads w here needed. S uggestions in th is
m a tte r will at* all tim es be welcome from tag -
pavers in th e d istric ts afiected. He will m ake it
his business to co n stan tly Inspect ALL the coun
ty roads in person. It is not his intention to
w ear out an office ch a ir in th e courthouse.
3. BIGGER AND BETTER COUNTY FAIR
CLAY 8. MORSE believes th a t th e County F air
has a trem endous value in th e ag ric u ltu ra l de
velopm ent of th e county, both educationally and
th ro u g h th e adv ertisin g it b rin g s to th e com m u
nity. It is his purpose to lend every possible a s
sistan ce to its co n tin u al im provem ent.
"D anger lu rk s around th e corner for every
au to ist un til a uniform w idth of roadw ay and
stan d ard curve dim ensions and elevations are in
stalled. in th e opinion of Clay S. Morse, organizer
of the P o rtlan d b ranch of the N ational Safety
Council and an exponent of w ider and better high
w ays in Oregon.
"T h e bad curves should be m ade absolutely
fool proof, even if we have to build a stone fence
to effect this. P erh ap s a dozen lives m ight have
been saved recently in highw ay accidents if safe
g u ard s had been built."
5» WOULD ELIMINATE INTERSTATE BRIDGE
TOLLS
CLAY 8. MORSE considers th a t the proposed
co n stru ctio n oi a toll bridge by private in terests
on th e Low er Columbia R iver would be detrim en
tal to shipping in P o rtlan d and consequently a
h in d ran ce to the grow th of the com m unity. He
would elim inate th e In te rsta te bridge tolls as th e
stro n g est possible move to prevent the c o n stru c
tion of th is bridge. He would hold the In te rsta te
bridge sinking fund in ta c t and would invest the
money in legal secu rities paying higher ra te s of
in te rest th an the two per cent, now received.
6. WOULD DEPAKTMENTIZE TIIE COUNTY
ADMINISTRATION
The law contem plates th ree com plete com m is

departm en tiztn g th is w ould be accom plished and
no p a r t- o f th e county business neglected; nor
should it be n ecessary for any citizen to p resent
