T H. R ussell, head of the Clean
L anguage league of A m erica, is qu o t
ed as saying, in effect, th a t, "If we
c a n ’t stop loose language by educa
tion w e’ll do it by legislation."
It is to be hoped th a t Mr. Russell
w as m isquoted. It would be much
b etter if he had said, "Wo c a n 't stop
loose language by legislation but we
can do It by education.”
A bolishing of profanity by sta tu te
would be u tte rly im possible. No one
w ill deny th a t th e re is too m uch dirty
language, but the language reform ers
w ill never legislate it off the tongues.
However, a m ovem ent to tell the peo
ple about th e viciousness of it, m ore
th an likely would have a good effect.
