and gave a satisfacto ry explanation of
the failu re to dispose of several car
loads of cabbage w hich left T routdale
d u rin g th e m onth of Ja n u ary , w hich
involved a big loss to th e grow ers.
Mr. P rin ce explained th a t w hite ca b
bage w as shipped instead of green.
T he m ild w in ter w as bad for the ca b
bage in stores, and green cabbage was
cu t from the fields in m any sections to
supply th e dem and, w hich worked a
h ard sh ip on the grow ers who had
stored th e ir stock during th e w inter.
No blam e w as laid to anybody con
nected w ith the m anagem ent of se ll
ing th e cabbage, it w as sim ply a case
of bad .luck.
As th e final rep o rts on th e cabbage
situ atio n have not been received, no
settlem en t w as made, but it is expect
ed in a sh o rt time.
It w as voted to raise th e m em ber
ship fee from one dollar to $25 a year
a fte r M arch 1. The m a tte r of fixing
a schedule w as left to th e directors.

T he plans for the extension of Kelly
avenue, petitions for w hich w ere re
ceived and acted on a few w eeks ago
by the city council, w ere given an o th
er boost at the m eeting of th e council

cepted and an ord in an ce covering the

A larg e crew of men yesterday r e
sum ed w ork on th e foundation for the
new building for A. J. W. Brown,
w hich was h alted a few w eeks ago by
excessive ra in s and high w ater. E x
cavations for th e con crete footings
soon filled up and it w as im possible to
proceed u n til th e w ater receded. A
stab le foundation has been secured by
digging below th e creek bed, and the
co ncrete for th e footings is being
poured today.

tions of the building a re to be laid,
which have proved en tirely sa tisfa c
tory, according to Mr. Brow n's a rc h i
tect. Wm. Laing, who em ployed Blood

P o rtlan d , and ex p erts in soils for
foundations. T ests tak en a y ear ago
by borings showed an excellent
stra tu m of blue clay 17 feet thick,
w hich Is said to be Ideal soil for the
purpose. T he footings, w hich a re b e
ing poured today, are on th is clay.
A nother question w hich has had the
careful atten tio n of Mr. Brow n Is th a t
of th e drain ag e from th e higher
ground to th e n o rth and w est of his
building, w hich has been ru n n in g from
num erous septic ta n k s u nder Powell
s tre e t Into an open ditch ac ro ss hts
p ro p erty Into Johnson creek. It has
been decided to co n stru c t a reinforced
box culvert below th e sub-basem ent to
ca re for th is drainage. A num ber of
p roperty ow ners, w hose septic tan k s
have found an ou tlet on Mr. Brow n's
p roperty, have expressed a w illingness
to sh a re In th e expense of the p erm a
nent cu lv ert, and it is th o u g h t th a t
p rac tica lly all will b ear th eir share,
especially as Mr. Brown will not m ake
any use of th e d rain him self. The
sew erage from the new building will
be tak en ca re of by th e septic tan k
already on th e p roperty, w hich has
been inspected by sta te au th o rities
and a perm it given for Its use.
The building w hen com plete will be
70 feet wide at th e w est, n early 50 at
the east and 100 feet at the north on
Powell street. It will have one story
above the stre e t level, a basem ent and
sub-basem ent, each of w hich will be
en tirely open to daylight on the south
exposure, w here the m axim um am ount
of g lass lias been provided for. Re
inforced concrete will be used In the
foundation and w alls up to th e floor
of th e basem ent, m aking an exceeding
stab le base for the su p e rstru c tu re .
T he u pper story w ill contain five
roomy stores, one of w hich w ill be
occupied by th e G resham Meat M arket.

REMEDY FOUND FOR
STRAWBERRY PEST
A new straw b e rry root weevil rem
edy th a t Is easily applied, efficient and
low in cost has been perfected, accord
ing to M. J. F orsell. 2224 Second ave
nue, S eattle, W ashington, and the en-
tom olgists of th e w estern W ashington
experim ent statio n and the m ain ex
p erim ent statio n a t P ullm an. The
rem edy co n sists of a poison bait,
w hich is applied to the p lan ts for the
purpose of killing the beetles. It Is
m ade up of a secret form ula of sub
stan ces attractiv e, edible, and de
stru ctiv e to the weevils. The copy
rig h ted nam e of th e m aterial, as given
by Mr. Forsell, is “Go W est,”
T his poison halt Is the resu lt of four
y ears' w ork by Mr. F o rsell, who Is
thoroughly qualified for carry in g on
such work. D uring the past tw o years
it has been ra th e r thoroughly tested
by the W ashington S tate experim ent
statio n entom ologists and pronounced
effective. In one experim ent these
entom ologists placed 100 live beetles
on each of th ree p lan ts, on w hich a
sm all am ount of this poison halt had
been applied. The plan ts w ere en
closed u nder Bell Jars, and five days
la ter counts w ere m ade of the dead
beetles. The th ree p lan ts had 95, 93,
and 93 dead beetles respectively. W ith
in a few hours the other 5, 7. and 7
beetles w ere dead, giving 100 per cent
kill. Also, the field in w hich th is te st
was m ade was poisoned as a whole,
and 5 days later exam inations made.
Five days la ter th e field was th o ro u g h
ly exam ined by th ree train ed entom ol
ogists of W ashington state, and no live
beetles found. O ther te sts w ere c a r
ried on in o th er infested fields near
Puyallup, and after thorough exam ina
tion 100 per cen t kill w as rep orted in
all cases In five o r six days' tim e.
T hese sam e fields w ere exam ined for
weevil larv a in October, and in all
cases found to be free of weevils, es
tab lish in g the fact th a t the beetles
w ere all killed before egg laying s ta r t
ed in the sum m er.
T he cost of th is m aterial Is $15 per
hundred in c a r lots.

vantage to supply th e ir grow ers w ith
th is effective rem edy for the struw -
b erry root weevil.

able for th e w eevils as they appear,
before they s ta rt depositing th eir eggs.
