COUNTRY SCHOOLS MAKE GOOD PROGRESS

T here are now 39 school d istric ts lo
cated en tirely in M ultnom ah county
w-hich conduct elem en tary schools.
We have also nine jo in t d istric ts
m aking a to tal of 48. D uring th e year
we lost tw o d istric ts by annexation to
Schooi D istrict No. 1. T w enty-seven
of th ese d istric ts aTe located east of
th e city. One d istric t also m a in ta in s a
sta n d ard high school. In addition we
have tw o union high schools, num bers
one and two, located a t C orbett and
G resham respectively.
Of th e 27
schools ea st of th e city th e re a re now
b ut five one-room schools. All of them
m ain tain a nine m onth's term . E ight
y ea rs ago we had but one school
building in e a ste rn M ultnom ah county
th a t w as in any resp ect m odern; to
day th e re are 12.

grow th. T he building is of hollow tile
c o n stru c tio n w ith brick p iers and
brick facings.
At P a rk ro se th e re is a new high
school building having to u r class
room s, a te a c h e r's room and a prin-
sip a l's office w ith ad ditional room s in
the basem ent for a science lab o rato ry ,
dom estic science and m anual tr a in
ing. All floors a re h ard wood and the
building is equipped w ith sla te b la ck
boards th ro u g h o u t. The ap p ro x im ate
cost of th e building is $31,000. P lan s
a re u n d er w ay for a new six-room
building at Rockwood.
Club w ork for a num ber of y ea rs
has been an o u tstan d in g fe a tu re in
th is county, an d now u nder th e able
i d irectio n of W. D. K inder, th e county
club leader, th e w ork is steadily p ro
g ressin g . This advancem ent is show n
! by th e enthusiasm of th e m em bers
and th e q u ality of th e various p ro d
ucts. T his year a new p ro ject has
been added to prom ote aud dem on
s tr a te good physical developm ent, and
h ealth clubs a re being form ed to c a rry
out th is program . T h ree or m ore of
th ese clubs will be organized in th e
county th is y ea r—th e first one to be
at R ussellville. T his w ork is to be
under th e supervision of th e a g ric u l
tu ra l college directed Jointly by Mr.
K inder and Miss Mary P. B illm eyer.
