Light th e C an d les on th e T rees of H ope
ONDROUS eyes are blinking, now, and angels gathering near a myriad
downy beds. Mothers pat their babes to sleep, their tender smiles caressing
cheeks of innocence. The elves are laughing as they take to rest in drops of shim
mering dew, and all the world is ready for the coming day—for this is Christ
mas tide.
Gaze then old and young into the starlit night and see again the vision of the
manger—feel that spirit of the Child King—Jesus—He who brought to us the ever
lasting heritage of Love and Peace and Hope. Out on you, you greybeards, if
you do not set aside the frown and hold a hand of hearty welcome to the coming
of Santa Claus.
The child is King—Long live the King!—for happy land when all the days shall be
those of trustfulness and al! the hours be those of purity of heart and tenderness of soul. The
chilling blasts of warlike trumpet’s call transformed to melody of God-like glory to ears not
yet attuned to sounds of bestial conflict.
Duplicity is disarmed by gazing eyes of love that comprehend only that the truth is all
in all. The world is in the heart, which at this yuletide season is strengthened and renewed
by the spirit of the King of Kings.
Let Christmas chimes ring out, echoing from meadow lands and throughout the busy
streets of great industrial centers. Let hearts refreshed take joy and gladness to those who
are heavy laden. Carry to them your gifts, light the candles on theii trees of hope. Let
smiles of love shine upon them, and be reflected from the silvered globes that hang from
many thousand shrubs of green.
This is Christmas! Children’s day, the yearly echo of the Child of God, brought to
us that we may thrill in the joy of service and love of fellowman.
Christmas awake! Salute the happy morn!
