Ju ly 4. It seem s m ost fitting to com
bine the ce lc h ra t'o n of A m erican in
dependence w ith a te st of th e loyalty
of ou r citizen ry and a rem oval of th e
pledge of ou r w illingness to defend
ou r in stitu tio n s ag a in st invaders and
m ake a te st of ou r m ilita ry stren g th
in case of a n atio n al call.
A gain it m u st be said the object is
not m ilita ristic . It is a rem inder and
exhibition of p rep a ra tio n and pledge
o f loyalty.
It has been im possible for the O ut
look to find out w hat p lans have been
m ade locally to c a rry out th e sp irit
an d le tte r of the plan announced by
th e governm ent. T hose having it in
c h a rg e have m ade no definite a n
nouncem ent but th e re is no doubt of
th e loyalty of our citizens. T he com
m unity is stro n g ly p atrio tic.

p o rt given them put us n ea r th e front
as a p atrio tic com m unity. L ast year
th e plan suggested was in the n a tu re
of an en ro llm en t and a public g a th e r
ing w ith p atrio tic addresses.
T his y ear the gen eral plan includes
th e use of the radio, b roadcasting p a
trio tic ad dresses by prom inent men by
w hich m eans it is estim ated tw enty
m illion people will be reached with

L ast year D efense day w as observed
in connection w ith A rm istice day
P re sid en t Coolidge objected to th is
plan for th is y ear and it was decided
a t a late date to com bine it w ith In
dependence day. T he sh o rtn ess of the
tim e probably accounts for th e lack
of w orking out a m ore definite local
plan.
L ast year the en ro llm en t of th is Io
ca lity was 300 and these a re consid
ered enrolled for th is year also unless
nam es a re definitely w ithdraw n.
