for a helping hand, would have been
lo st to society long ago.
O th er th o u san d s need th a t sam e
help today. Many of them can n o t be
Si ven aid by th e governm ent under
ex istin g laws, and w hile officials of
T he Legion literally have w ritten
m ost of th e law s to ta k e ca re of the
disabled, it is im possible to m ake leg
islation serve all.

since th e w ar ended, when they
seem ingly w ere sound physically, but
in reality w ere in a w eakened condi
tion from gas and exposure.
They
fell in to th e clu tch es of tu b ercu lo sis
and o th e r diseases, and in a few
y ea rs have passed away, leaving th e ir
widows and children a t the m ercy of
stran g e rs.

T he Legion is d eterm ined th a t every
child of a w ar v eteran shall have as
good a home, and a real m o th er's love,
as th a t child would have had tf his
fa th e r had not died for his country.

pupils of th e eighth grad e w ere held

baseball gam e betw een th e m arried
women and the g irls' team , um pired
by W. 1). K inder, proved an event of
in te rest. T he gam e w as won by th e
m a rrie d ladies. T he boys of R u ssell
ville and Rockwood played a gam e of
ball in w hich th e Rockwood boys won
by a score of 17 to 4. Each of th e
four te ac h ers of th e Rockwood school
w as p resen ted w ith a handsom e r e
m em brance by the pupils of th e ir r e
spective room s. Mrs. A nna Studley,
te ac h er of the 7th and 8th grades, re
ceived a carv in g set from her pupils,
Mrs. M arian D aggett, the 5th and 6th
g rad e teach er, a gold pen and pencil,
Mrs. Lyle Sm ith, te ac h er of the 3d
and 4th g rad es, a Com m unity plate
b erry spoon, and Mrs. M arian Hamlin,
the 1st anil 2d g rad e teach er, w as pre-
sented w ith u set of «liver knives and '
fo rk s by her little folks. A gold w atch
w as aw arded to Annie Roe at the ex
ercises held a t Lincoln high school,
for the n eatest table.
