new g ask ets into the gas m ain con
nectlon Joints along north Main street.
T heir w ork was to extend only to the
Section L ine road w here th e re Is
sm a lle r pipe w hich does not req u ire
any g askets, being connected by a
screw pipe union.
O rdinarily th e gask ets have to be
replaced every ten y ea rs to prevent
unnecessary leakage, hut al tills tim e
the com pany is obviating the neces­
sity of ever having to dig thro u g h to
tlie main pipe again by in stallin g lead
gaskets in place of th e rubber ones
w hich have form erly been in use.
The crew of ten men can rep lace
from 40 to 50 gask ets in a day. They
are obliged to rem ove the d irt to a
depth of four feet each tim e a new
gasket is installed. T he face of the
w orkm an who does th e changing of
th e g askets under ground is protected
by a gas m ask and he Is supplied with
fresh air co n stan tly by m eans of a
hand-operated bellow s pum ping the
oxygen to him thro u g h a hose.
The work w as Interestin g to a nu m ­
ber of sp e cta to rs who w ere on hand
to offer suggestions and gain inform a­
tion.
