N ew spaper rep o rtin g , editing and
publishing is not easy w ork. It is as
hard as any o th e r p rtic u la r, com pli
cated, laborious task . It re q u ire s in
ten se m ental ap plication and the me
clianical operatio n s req u ire unbound
ed skill and physical exertion.
Yet it is as p le asa n t as any p le asa n t
work, and th a t’s saying a good deal.
T here are few occupations, or profes
sions, th a t one can take m ore in te re st
in and feel a g re a te r sa tisfac tio n w hen
the ta sk is com pleted.
S peaking of the w ritin g end, A rth u r
B risbane, said to be one of th e h ig h
est paid w riters in th e country, say s:
"T o believe som ething and say w hat
you believe, to see things clea rly and
describe them sim ply, to know w hat
the people th in k and w rite ab o u t th eir
thinking, to rem em ber th a t your con
sta n t loyalty belongs to th e poorest
man th a t rea d s your new sp ap er—
th a t is all th e re is to n ew spaper sue
cess.”
T he m echunlcal w ork of producing
a new spaper is equally im po rtan t. In
th is resp e ct th e Outlook is m ore for
tu n a te th an th e average, having ade
quato m odern m achinery and one of
th e best m echanical forces it is pos
sible to obtain.
Few persons who read a n ew sp a
per, w hether th e big city daily or the
"hom e tow n" weekly, or tw ice-a-w eek,
have any conception of th e in tric a te
and alm ost inflnfte num ber of opera
tions, little and large, n ecessary to
produce the com pleted paper.
Yet w ith th e best of plans and m ost
p ain sta k in g efforts and high am bitions
occasional failu res will occur. P lan s
don’t alw ays w ork out. U nforeseen
hin d ran ces arise. A production th a t
is dependant on so m any persons and
so m any m achines may m eet w ith un
avoidable delays.
We som etim es w ish every su b scrib er
and every rea d er could w itness the
production of one issue of th e paper
If th e said su b scrib er or rea d er was
hum an th e re would re su lt a g re a te r
appreciation of the efforts required.
