V irginia, has not, so far, been able
to list h erse lf am ong th o se sta te s
pro m in en tly identified w ith th e good-
ro ad s m ovem ent, alth o u g h she has
m ade vast strid e s in recen t years. The
road from W ashington to th e Tem ple,
and from A lexandria to Mt. V ernon is
a good road, b ut it should he th e w ork
of th e United S tate s g overnm ent to see
th a t so im p o rtan t a road is perfect. In
th is is seen an o th er am ong m any a r ­
gum ents, as to why th is g re a t nation
should itself build and fo rev er m ain ­
ta in th e backbone ro ad s w hich, as
n atio n al highw ays, w ill serv e a ll th e
people all th e tim e.

T he P o rtlan d office of th e F o rest
Service has ju st issued a new road and
rec re atio n m ap for th e sta te of O re­
gon.
T his folder of com pact, pocket-size,
c a rrie s on its face an up -to -d ate map
of all paved, graveled tru n k , secon­
d ary and proposed ro ad s of th e state,
w ith m ileages betw een all points. On
th e back is p rin ted m a tte r d escrip tiv e
of all th e cam ping places, rec re atio n
and scenic are as of th e N ational F o r­
est areas. T h ere is also given the
m ost com plete list so far published of
th ? m unicipal au to cam ps of th e state.
T his list gives detailed in fo rm atio n as
to accom m odations to be found at
each au to cam p and includes 106 O re­
gon tow ns, arran g e d alp h ab etically
from A lbany to Y am hill. T his d ata
on au to cam ps w as collected la st
sp rin g by th e Oregon T o u rist and In ­
form ation B ureau and th is is th e first
tim e th a t it has ap p eared in p rin t.
T h ere a re special w rite-u p s, ty in g In
by n um ber to th e m ap, o r 22 of th e
m ain scenic, recreatio n and cam ping
a re a s of th e N ational F o re sts of O re­
gon. In addition th e re a re fo re st fire
and sa n ita tio n cautions, suggestions
for th e use of public cam ps, a list of
all F o re st S u p erv iso rs’ h ea d q u arte rs
in th e state. T he folder Is illu stra te d
w ith eight cu ts of Oregon scenery and
cam ps.
A som ew hat sim ila r m ap, though
not as com plete, w as issued in 1921 and
th e edition of 50,000 copies w as soon
exhausted, req u ests being received not
only from all over th e sta te of Oregon
b ut a very larg e num ber being r e ­
ceived from o th er sta te s, and esp ec ial­
ly from e a ste rn states. T his folder
m ap is said to be the best piece of a d ­
v ertisin g of O regon's fo rest scenery
and a ttra c tio n s yet put o ut by th e
F o re st Service.
