It is said th a t under the p rese n t ad
ra ln lstra to n about 2000 women have
been appointed in ch a rg e of first, sec­
ond or th ird class postoffices and
th e re a re m any thou san d s w ho are
holding positions as p o stm istresses in
fo u rth class offices.
T here is one po stm istress who draw s
a sa la ry of $6,000 a year. In addition,
th e re are m any women a s sista n ts in
th e la rg e r postoffices of th e country
druw ing sa la rie s ran g in g from $2000
to $4000.
G resham is one of the postoffices
th a t has the distinction of being ad­
m inistered by a woman. If all women
p o stm aste rs w ere as capable and gave
as g eneral satisfactio n as G resh am ’s
th e re would be no reason to com plain
of th e change in sentim ent and p ra c ­
tice w hich places w om en in th e se r e ­
sponsible positions.
TOO MANY COAL MINERS.
One tro u b le w ith th e coal m ining
b usiness Is th a t th e re a re too m any
w orking at it. T he re su lt is it is un-
econom ically organized from th e poinP
of view of the United S tate s coal com ­
m ission. T here a re said to be 200,000
m ore m iners th a n a re needed.
T his m eans th a t th e in d u stry m ust
su p p o rt th a t num ber of u n necessary
men. W ages have to be held up high
enough so th a t a ll m iners w orking
only p a rt tim e a re taken c a re of. T he
net re su lt Is th e e x tra cost m u st be
borne by the consum ers of coal.
It is to be hoped th e coal com m is­
sion can do som ething to cu re th is
evil. T he coal o p era to rs a re fran k ly
helpless.
