Established in 1883, Forty years ago, by A. B. Elliott
The word duty is either a harsh or
a sweet word according to one's atti
tude of mind. To one it is the lash of
a hard taskmaster, to another it is the
urge of a kind friend who has our
present and future welfare at heart.
To the unwilling person, who is out
of harmony with his surroundings and
conditions of life, the suggestion of
duty arouses a spirit of rebellion and
the performance will be perfunctory
and joyless. The one who is in har
mony with a supreme will which de
termines our obligations will say,
“What wilt thou have me to do?” and
will be glad in the performance of
that which is known to be right and
best.
Man's first and supreme duty is to
his maker and next to his fellow man.
His obligations to each are so related
and united that he cannot fulfill one
without fulfilling the other. He serves
his fellowman by serving God and he
serves God by serving his fellow man.
Man also owes a duty to himself, inas
much as he cannot meet the pre
scribed conditions of his existence
without doing what is right and nec
essary by himself.
Only the mental balance and heart
poise that come from prayerful con
viction can keep one going steadily,
joyfully on in this threefold path of
duty. The lines of duty may often
cross our lines of personal pleasure
but they should not cross our line of
true happiness for our greatest joy
should be to do our duty.
Discouragement often comes be
cause someone doesn't praise us for
doing our duty. Praise helps, but the
Inner satisfaction of duty gladly done
is worth more than the praise of man.
Duty may sometimes lay on us dif
ficult tasks but the outcome If we try
always spells success while neglect
of duty inevitably spells failure in
life.
