tin u in g . T he g ran d stan d has been
moved across th e tra c k and rebuilt.
I t was first planned to enlarg e the
building but the plan has been aban-
• doned. It is now 40x90 feet, which
Is practically its fo rm er size. T he
14 boxes at th e fro n t have been re ­
b u ilt and a re now m ore presentable.
T he railin g a t th e fro n t has been
d eco rated w ith fancy posts w hich
. adds g re a tly to th e ap pearance of the
e n tire building. T he steps leading
into th e g ra n d sta n d w ere to rn down
and replaced by new ones. Enough
space has been added to th e landing
a t th e top of th e steps fo r th e ticket
se lle r’s stan d . The roof has not yet
been shingled b u t o therw ise th e
b u ild in g is practically com plete. A
space has been left on th e so u th end
u n d ern e ath th e g ra n d sta n d for a
concession booth w hich will be
ren ted d u rin g th e fair.
All th e horse stab les have been

so u th end of the grounds. M achin­

m ain pavilion w here th e fountain

electric lig h ts and wood is supplied
and a charg e of 50 cents a day is
m ade for each au to en terin g th e
cam p grounds. T his is considered a
very reasonable ra te as it includes
th e o v ersig h t of th e grounds, wood,
w ate r and light.
A m eeting of the fa ir board was
held last W ednesday. Mrs. U. C.
Sm ith, w ho has charge of th e a r t de-
p artm en t in th e M ultnom ah county
fair, appeared before th e board and
reg istered the com plaint th a t some
of th e changes she had m ade in th e
prem ium list in th e a r t d ep a rtm en t
had been om itted. T his was caused
by some of th e copy being m isplaced
and n ot reaching th e p rin te r.

T h at courage and intelligence can
overcome the trem endous handicap
of blindness has again been demon­
strated in the person of Miss Cath­
erine Burke, who lost her sight
when she was sixteen. Aided by a
stylus and point system in note
taking, and a typew riter in examin­
ations, Miss Burke prepared for col­
lege in Chicago, her home town,
and went to the U niversity of W is­
consin for her first two college
years.
On her graduation from
Barnard College, and after winning
high honors, she was elected a
member of the Phi Belta Kappa
Sorority.

every foreign nation purely accord­
ing to its conduct in th a t crisis.
This nation was founded because
th e A m ericans of 1776, alth o u g h pre­
dom inantly E nglish by blood, fought
th e ir own kinsm en to estab lish th e ir
lib erty and to m ake th is n atio n th e
hope of th e world. Again, o ver a
cen tu ry ago, o u r fo re fa th e rs once
m ore fo u g h t E n g lan d ; and th e men
in th is co u n try who were of E nglish
blood stood w ith absolute loyalty by
A m erica and ag ain st E ngland. It is
n o t m erely o u r rig h t but e u r duty to
in sist on exactly th e sam e fu ll-h e a rt­
ed loyalty by all A m ericans of o th e r
descent, w henever we are a t w ar
w ith th e country from w hich th e ir
ancestors came.
We welcome th e G erm an o r th e
Irish m an who becomes an A m erican.
W e have no use for th e G erm an or
Irish m an who rem ains as such. We
do not wish G erm an-A m ericana or
Irish-A m ericans who figure as such
in o u r social an d political life; we
w ant only Am ericans and, provided
they are such, we do n o t care w h eth ­
e r they are of n ativ e o r of Irish or of
G erm an ancestry. We have no room
in any h ealthy A m erican com m unity

th e u rg en t needs of N ear E ast relief
work. Two reels of pictu res were
show n, th e pictures having been ta k ­
en u n d er Mr. H a n d sa k er’s direction
d u rin g his trip of investigation in
th e cities of A rm enia and th e N ear
E ast last sum m er. He told of th e
d ire present need fo r money and
clothing in o rd er to keep th e o rp h an ­
ages supplied and co n tin u e th e care
of th e hu n d red and ten th o u san d
ch ild ren now u n d er A m erican su p e r­

All of th ese are o rphaned ch il­
d ren an d would be absolutely help ­
less and sta rv in g if n ot provided for
by A m erican m eans and w orkers.

starv in g , Mr. H an d sak er says efforts

vation of crops.

local com m ittee to cooperate in the
