The governm ent of C anada Is in
serious d anger of having Its cred it
destroyed by it» railro ad policy.
The railw ays ow ned by th e Do
m inion of C anada failed in 1921 by
about $20,000,000 to earn enough
to pay th e ir operating expenses.
To this m ust be added ab o u t
$100,000,000 for in te rest on th e In
vestm ent which was not earned.
T herefore, directly and indirectly,
governm ent ow nership of th e rail
ways last year added to th e burdens
of th e C anadian taxpayer aro u n d
$120,000,000.
T he deficit officially ad m itted by
th e C anadian governm ent for 1920,
was over $70,000,000 but th is did
not Include in terest on a large p a rt (
of tl<e railw ays.- .1. L. Payne, form er |
controller of sta tistics of d ep artm en t -
of railw ays and canals, estim ated th e j
to tal losses, direct and indirect, in
1920 at about $136,000,000.
The railw ay deficit of C anada is
becoming an extrem ely serious th in g .
C anada has only nine m illion people
and the Dominion governm ent has an
annual revenue of only about $450,-
000,000.
G overnm ent railw ay deficits were
Incurred by the railw ays of the
United States in 1918 and 1919 un

Since the governm ent g u ara n tee s

were w ithdraw n they have Incurred
losses, but the taxpayers have not
had to pay them .
