n o rth of G resham , has placed some
of h e r valuable dogs on exhibit th is
week in a show window of th e M eier
& F ra n k sto re in P o rtlan d . T here
are G reat Danes w ith puppies and
Police Dogs w ith puppies and a lto ­
g e th e r they a re a lively lot. T he
G reat Danes are so la rg e and pow er­
ful m any will th in k it fo rtu n a te they
can view them behind heavy plate
glass. T he police dogs a re very a t­
tra c tiv e and am ong th e m ost useful.
T he puppies of both breeds a re
d arlin g little fellow s you’ll w ant to
sn u g gle up in y o u r arm s.
Mrs. G reen is a w ell know n horse
and dog tra in e r and has ta u g h t h er
dogs to do m any w onderful trick s,
such as closing th e doors, opening th e
g ate, p u ttin g the baby (d o ll) to bed,
an d others. C leopatra, -one of h er
G reat Danes, a w hile ago gave the
alarm when fire sta rte d in th e house
and saved th e place from d estru c­
tion.
A fe a tu re of the display are tw o
poems w ritten by H. L. St. C lair for
th e occasion. They recite th e c h a r­
ac teristics and accom plishm ents of
th e dogs.
T he reception given a t th e lib ra ry
on W ednesday evening in h o n o r of
th e teach ers of th e schools by various
o rganization s was a splendid social
occasion w hich was enjoyed by a
la rg e n um b er of people. N early all
of th e 23 teach ers of th e tw o schools
pere p resen t in th e receiving line
and since m any of them a re teaching
here fo r the first tim e it was especial­
ly fitting th a t th e p atro n s be given
th is op p o rtu n ity to m eet them .

high school board, and a n u m b er of
pleasing m usical num bers w ere ren ­

group was req u ired to p u t on a stu n t.

T he lib ra ry proves to be an ideal
place for com m unity m eetings and it
is hoped th a t m any m ore such g a th e r­
ings may be held th e re d u rin g th e
w inter.

Local berry grow ers are in te re st­
ed in th e conditions in th e W illam ­
e tte valley w here dieback of th e lo-
g an b erry vines has been m uch in
in evidence. So many appeals were
sen t to th e Oregon A g ricu ltu ral Col­
lege concerning th e tro u b le th a t
special w ork on th e problem was
ta k en up by Dr. S. M. Z eller of th e
ex p erim en t statio n .
I t w as first th o u g h t th a t th e die­
back was caused by th e action of a
fungous disease. In m aking a th o r­
ough stu d y of th e situ atio n Dr. Zel­
le r has learn ed th a t die-back was
p rev alen t only in th o se y ard s w here
th e vines had been allow ed to rem ain
on th e g ro u n d th ro u g h o u t th e w in­
te r. W here th e canes had been
tra in e d up in th e fall th e vines w ere
in a very h ealth y condition and die­
back was alm ost en tirely absent.
T he co n tra st was very ap p a ren t in
ad jo in in g portions of th e sam e y ard
w here a p a rt of th e canes had been
tra in e d in th e fall and th e rest a l­
lowed to rem ain on th e gro u n d till
spring. O th er care was th e same.
T he local grow ers have n ot been
p racticin g th e tying up th e ir logan­
berry vines in th e fall and th e con­
dition p revalent in th e W illam ette
valley has not been noticed to any
ex tent here. Berry grow ers who
have been troubled w ith die-back on
th e ir vines will do well to train th e ir
logans in th e fall. T h ere is some
d an g er of losing a crop d u rin g an
especially severe w in ter lik e th e one
of 1919, b u t one gro w er has sta te d
th a t he could lose every fifth crop en ­
tirely and still m ake money by tr a in ­
ing his vines in th e fall.
