T his was decided upon a t the an nual com m unity m eeting held a t the C o ttrell schoolhouse T h ursday even ing. Such a course w ould include hom e economics, child w elfare, bet te r hom e equipm ent and o th e r sub jects w hich would ten d to develop b e tte r train ed hom e-m akers. S. B. H all, county agent, th is m orning when advised of th e action of the council la st evening expressed him self as delighted w ith th e proposi tion and will aid in every way the carry in g out of such a program . The G resham lib rary has been suggested as a su itab le m eeting place and the lectu res would be given by special ists from th e Oregon A gricultural College and elsew here. Mrs. E. E. V anF leet, chairm an of th e H orae Life com m ittee of the council gave th e com m ittees rep o rt ns follows: “ We recom m end first, th a t m ore social en te rta in m e n t be given in the hom e for boys and g irls of equal age, u n d er th e guidance and direc tion of th e ir parents. “ Second, because of th e num ber of cases of m al-n u tritio n found am ong children we recom m end th a t a study club or som e sim ila r club be form ed for the purpose of giving this m ore consideration. “ T hird, th a t a rep rese n tativ e or rep resen tativ es from o u r sta te col leges o r o thers be secured to give lectures on home econom ics, child w lefare, b etter hom e equipm ent, etc. “ F o u rth , believing In th e g rea t benefits of good music in a child’s life, we recom m end th a t w herever possible children be given in stru c tion in m usic.” T his rep o rt was accepted and the first and fo u rth recom m endations will of course rest upon th e p arents to a large extent. T he th ird will be handled thro u g h th e F arm ers Week plan an d th e second th ro u g h the P aren t-T eachers associations to which it was referred. Chas. G ossett presented th e report of th e com m ittee on b e tte r schools and th e report bro u g h t o u t consider able discussion. The rep o rt was as follow s: "W e favor consolidation of th e O rient, C o ttrell, Lusted and Victory schools.” This first clause brou g h t o u t con sid erab le diacùssion as to ways, m eans and tim e required. T his clause was referred back to th e P aren t- T eacher associations to ta k e up. It was agreed th a t th e consolidated schools had advantages b u t several questions w ere raised w hich no one present could definitely answ er so it was th e gen eral opinion th a t a care ful study of the situ atio n of these com m unities and of th e new county u n it bill would be a profitable su b ject for th e P arent-T eachers to take up th is w inter. No one present seemed to be of th e opinion th a t any radical action should be ta k en but th a t th e d istricts concerned should be considering th e possibilities of b e tte r schools by consolidation. T he o th e r four recom m endations which w ere adopted unanim ously by th o se present were as follow s: "W e recom m end Chat each P a r ent-T eacher association atten d the neighboring associations as often as possible and in as large a body as possible. “ We recom m end full cooperation by th e p aren ts w ith the teacher. “ Also th a t the teachers m ake it a point to visit th e p are n ts of each child at least tw ice each term of school.” An am endm ent was added recom m ending th a t th e p aren ts also m ake It a point to visit th e school. Much live discussion followed th ese recom m endations b u t th e one po in t b rou g h t o u t m ost stro n g ly was th e need of education to prep are boys and girls to solve th e problem s w hich th e ir p arents are facing now. “ If we educate them a ll,” said one, "th en we can surely find some who will have th e train in g and the m oral In teg rity to handle th e cooperative efforts, labor, unions, etc., w hich o r ganized fo r th e benefit of th e farm er and w orking man often th ro u g h lack of properly train ed leaders w ork to th e ir harm .
