FLAG DAY
"O long may It wave
O 'er the land of th e free
And th e home of the brave.’
EDISON AND T IIE COLLEGES
Mr. Edison's test questions and th e
failure of college train ed young men
to answ er them satisfactorily to Mr.
Edison has set th e country to th in k
ing.
Mr. Edison is both rig h t and
wrong. A college young m an is
lacking in many things but he has
gained a g reat deal th a t gives him
an advantage over th e un train ed
youth
A college education never was In
tended to m ake it possible for one
to answ er all th e technical questions
th a t (he scientist o r th e specialist
in any line m ight ask. A college edu
cation is prim arily a foundation of
know ledge and not an encyclopedia
In Itself. Its main object Is to teach
th e mind to th in k and reason aright.
It teaches Its possessor how to ob
serve and w here to go for Inform a
tion and how to use w hat he learns
and above all, how to live th e la rg
e r and m ore th o u g h tfu l life o r serv
ice.
At th e sam e tim e we m ust all ad
mit th a t with all our o pportunities
for train in g we are sadly lacking In
definite know ledge. We dissipate ou r
m ental powers and full to grasp and
hold w hat comes to o u r minds. We
are om nivorous readers hut cannot
tell soon afte rw a rd s w hat we have
read
“ Oh, I have read hut I c a n 't re
m em ber.” "I know but I c a n 't think
ju st now ." These are common ex
pressions th a t m ean a lam en tab le
confession of failure.
A high school o r a college train in g
m eans p rim arily th a t one sta rts life
as a stu d en t but one m ust keep It
up, outside of th e schoolroom s. In
o rd er to enjoy th e perm anent bene-1
fits. It m eans a capital to s ta rt with |
which like o th e r capital m ust be
constantly Invested in o rd er to draw
Interest. Hut It pays in th e long run.
Someone has figured It out this
way:
W ith no schooling thirty-one Am
ericans out of 5,000,000 rebelled dis
tinction.
With elem entary schooling, 808
out of 33,000,000 reached distinc
tion
With high school education, 1,245
out of 2,000,000 reached distinction.
With college education, 5,768 out
of 1,000,000 reached distinction.
Which, put In Another way, means
th a t the child with no schooling has
one chance In 150,000 of com ing to
prom inence: elem entary education
gives him four ehunces In 150,000;
high school education increases his
chances Io eighty-seven, but college
education gives hint 800 chances In
150,000.
Or look nt th e facts ns to men In
public life. Iu-ss th an one per cent
of American men a re college g ra d u
ates, Yet out of this one per cent have
come:
55 per re n t of ou r Presidents.
36 per cent of the Members of
Congress.
47 per cent of the Speakers of the
House.
66 per cent of th e V ice-Presidents.
62 p e r cent of th e S ecretaries of
State.
50 per cent of the S ecretaries of
T reasury.
69 per cent of the Justices of the
Supreme Court
T he college g rad u a te has not le arn
ed to answ er catchy questions which
no one ever ssks unless he w ants to
show off his own fam iliarity w ith In
form ational Junk pile*. Yet he has
managed to learn som ething which
th e world needs and will pay for.
