Among life-savers who soon will be
on duty a t w aters In every p a rt of
th e country will be 7,000 who hold
certificates from the A m erican Red
Cross showing they have passed the
rigorous exam ination before m em ber­
ship is granted in the Red Cross Life-
Saving Corps. Of this num ber, there
are 1,593 women whose prowess as
sw im m ers Is su fficien t to p u t them
on a par w ith men as life-savers. In
addition to the women, th e re are
m ore th an 600 boy and g irl mem bers
of th e Red Cross corps.
M em bership In th e Red Cross life­
saving corps carries certain obliga­
tions as to the service to which each
individual inust pledge him self. M ere­
ly passing th e test Is not sufficient.
In addition, the m em ber m ust agree
to devote a certain num ber of hours
of actual duty at beach o r pool.
More and m ore Is th e Red Cross
life-saver’s certificate com ing to
m ean an Indication of expertness
am ong sw im m ers and, as a conse­
quence, th e corps is gaining In m em ­
bership constantly. T hro u g h o u t the
country, th e re are 1,626 persons who
have qualified as exam iners and are
in a position to give tests to aspiring
sw im m ers in th e ir com m unities.
Among them are 303 women.

OREGON IN JULY
The Btate of Oregon Is on th e right
track at lust In regard to land se ttle ­
m ent, and the plan undertak en this
sum m er for bringing se ttle rs from
th e m iddle west, If followed as a
consistent policy for a num ber of
years, will bring Oregon up to her
rig h tfu l place In ru ra l population
and developm ent, according to C. C.
Glgnoux of Omaha, assista n t su p er­
visor of ag ricu ltu re of th e Union P a­
cific System, In an address before the
Oregon Btate cham ber of com merce
land settlem ent conference.
The conference of representative
business men and com m ercial club
secretaries was called to perfect ar­
rangem ents for the reception and en­
te rtain m e n t of the first train lo ad of
se ttle rs who will arriv e in Oregon
from the inl<j<lle W est on July 21st,
and to form ulate plans for a contin­
ued land se ttlem en t policy for the tu-
ture.

“ Oregon hus been a step o r two be­
hind the parade In th e past In regard
to land se ttle m en t,” declared Glgnoux
in pledging the unqualified support of
th e Union Pacific System to the pres-,
ent plans, ''H ereto fo re, th e re has
te e n no organized plan for bringing
se ttle rs to the slate, or to take care of
them afte r th e ir arrival. You are on
th e right track a t last, and your suc­
cess Is certain ."

s ta te cham ber, who haB Just retu rn ed

th e middle W esterners a re ready to .
move and are in terested In Oregon.
An increasingly large num ber of these
su b stan tia l farm ers can be brought to
Oregon each succeeding year, he said.

progress made lu the land settlem ent

thuslqsm by the assem bled delegates.
It was pointed out th a t a g reat Inter­
est In the hom eseekers' excursion to
Oregon In July was being m anifested
th ro u g h o u t th e m iddle W est. More
th a n 1,000 Inquiries had been answ er­
ed th u s far. According to th e report
T he fullest cooperation In th e land
settle m en t plans of the S tale Cham ­
b er was pledged by the delegates
from th e various parts of the sta te
who w ere present at tho conference.
