T he boys and girls of the grade
school began th e ir vacation S atu r­
day, May 21. with happy h ea rts but
w ith reg rets th a t school had closed
so soon. T he y ear has been one of
th e m ost successful in th e histo ry of
th e school and show s considerable
grow th over form er years.
T here was a to ta l en ro llm en t d u r­
ing th e year of 27 4 pupils, consisting
of 153 boys and 121 g irls. Some of
th e rooms w ere filled to capacity and
if G resham continues its p resent rate
of increase in grow th, w hich it is
safe to say th a t it will, m ore room
will have to be provided very soon to
properly care fo r its boys and girls.
T he prim ary room had th e la rg e st
enrollm ent w hich reached 58 and
had an average atten d a n ce of 40.
T he school was ju stly proud of this
g roup of splendid youngsters.
T he second g rad e was next in en­
rollm ent w ith a total of 41 pupils.
T he o th e r grades had enrollm ents as
follow s: F e u rth grade, 34 pupils:
eig h th grade, 30 pupils; fifth grade,
28 pupils; sixth g rad e , 27 pupils:
th ird grade, 27 pupils; seventh grade,
25 pupils.
T he percentage of atten d an ce was
96 p er cent w hich is unusually good.
T here w ere five pupils, n eith er absent
n o r late d uring th e y ear and had it
n ot been fo r th e prev alen t co n tag ­
ions d u rin g th e year m any m ore
would have been added to th is list.
T he teachers are all highly pleased
w ith th e work of th e boys and girls
d u rin g th e year and feel th a t much
cred it should be given th e pupils for
th e good y ea r’s w’ork.
In addition to th e reg u la r school
w ork, much club w ork was done d u r­
ing th e year and G resham school is
going to m ake a good show ing at th e
M ultnom ah county fa ir th is year.
T he closing w eeks w ere very busy
w eeks th ro u g h o u t th e school and es­
pecially for th e g rad u a tin g class
w hich consisted of 26 boys and girls.
T his Is one of the larg est if not th e
la rg e st g rad u a tin g class in th e hts-
ory of th e school. All of thpm are
going to e n te r high school in Septem ­
ber.
Tw enty of them will en ter
Union High, two Henson Polytechnic
and the rem aining four are rem oving
from G resham and will en te r the
high schools of th e ir various places
of residence.
T his is a class of splendid young
folks and th e fact th a t all of them
a re going to e n te r high school speaks
well for th e ir fu tu re.
T he g rad u ates had a prom inent
p a rt in the g ra d u a tin g exercise at
Lincoln High school in P o rtlan d and
th e cred it of G resham was held high
by them . They received m any com ­
plim ents for th e ir splendid p art of
th e program .
On th e closing day they planned
and carried o u t a com plete su rp rise
on th e ir teacher, C. M. Q ulcksall, by
p resen tin g him w ith a sardonyx ring
inset w ith th e Masonic em blem , inap-

held its first m eeting last week and
a fte r going over th e fru it problem s
of the county decided to devote th e ir
energy tow ard developing the sm all
fru it ind u stry here. They plan to
line th e ir w ork up th is sum m er to de­
term in e th e best practices in cu ltiv a­
tion, fertilizatio n , and trellisin g th a t
are in use in th is county.
T he m em bers of th e com m ittee A ill
m ake observations on th e practices
in use by various grow ers and will
check up a t picking season.
T he com m ittee plans to a rra n g e a
to u r abo u t th e m iddle of th e picking
season to see w hat resu lts are ob­
tained. At th is tim e they will de­
term in e by th e q u ality, q u an tity and
gen eral appearance of th e fru it
w hich m ethods are best. They will
also check up on th e yields a t th e
end of th e season and from th ese
facts will fo rm u la te w hat th e best
practices are. T hese will be helpful
to th e m any people who are tak in g
up the raisin g of berries for th e first
tim e and are often som ew hat con­
fused by th e many different m ethods
advocated by various grow ers.
T his fall th e com m ittee will prob­
ably select a few d em o n stratio n
farm s. These farm s will be those of
th e men who will agree to ad o p t th e
practices recom m ended by th e com ­
m ittee an d follow them out. T his
will d em o n strate w h at can be done if
th e m ethods recom m ended are c a r­
ried out.
