Ah, th a n k you, Mr. O regonian and
i a ta rg e response com es from th e
I "am en c o rn e r.”
A GOOD INDICATION.
People have heard a good deal
about "back Io norm alcy” and many
have w ondered w hat th is m eans and
how they would know when this con
dition was realized. D oubtless many
have th o u g h t “ back to n o rm al”
m eant a com plete re tu rn to pre-w ar
prices. T his idea is evidently m is
leading. It should be understood as 1
referrin g m ore to general conditions
then m erely to prices.
As a resu lt of w ar conditions th e re I
has been sh o rtag e of production, ab
norm ally high prices, profiteering,
etc. One very noticeable condition
of w ar tim e was lack of th e sp irit of
accom m odation and courtesy. It a f
fected not only proprietors but clerks
and many public servants.
At th is C hristm as tim e th e re Is a
noticeable tendency tow ard a retu rn
to the m ore usual and reasonable
habit of thought and m anner of a c t
ing on the p art of all.
T his Is especially seen In th e
C hristm as observance and holiday
buying In general. People are dec
oratin g , and buying, and giving, and
enjoying them selves, not In an orgy
of spending but more In keeping with
the norm al a ttitu d e of a prosperous
and happy people. Prices have not
reached a pre-w ar level by any m eans,
and probably never will, but prices
are dropping and th e psychological
effect Is trem endous and far reaching.
People a re g etting back to norm al
and th a t's th e most significant and
hopeful fact Just now.
