GRESHAM CHRISTMAS NUMBER, 1918 OUTLOOK WILLING WOMEN WORKERS BEHIND THE LINES HELP MEN TO WIN THE WAR AUXILIARIES YET FIGHTING IN THE RANKS Every Community W as lo o Per Cent Effscient and Is Still Going Over the Top T he work of the Red C ross is too well known to need any explanation and the value of th e stupendous ta sa accom plished by the n atio n al o rg a n i zation can never be com puted. S tatis ticians will m arshal the figure» and rep o rt th a t ho many dollar» were raised and ho many g arm e n ts m ade and ho many bandages rolled, but the real work done can never be counted In dollars and cents. No acco u n tan t 1 h wise enough to m easure th e value of suffering relieved, of th e dying com forted, of hom es re-established and of the g ath erin g to g e th e r of o r phaned ami d e stitu te ch ild ren and giving them th e things necessary for th e ir com fort and life. T hese are only vague hin ts of the visible work u n d erta k en and success fully done by th e Red Cross. W hat Is alm ost as m arvelous is w hat has been accom plished In the heartH anil lives of the women th ro u g h o u t our broad land. W omen who have beet) u tterly selfish have found th e ir lives broadened and th e ir sym pathies ex panded by th e ir work fo r th e relief of suffering. They have sacrificed com fort ami ease for stren u o u s work for others. How they have put their best selves In the stitch es they have sewed o r k n itted ! In re tu rn they have hud the satisfaction th a t they were doing w hat they could and P. has m ade b e tte r women of them. T he Red Cross work has been a real sacrifice to the women of the rurul districts, as It has been curried on It. sp ite of the fact that all the young men were gone to the lighting line or th e trulnlng cam ps, th e men who have been doing light chores for sev eral years had taken up th e burden of farm work and o th e r active duties and the women were req u ired to ad 1 to th e ir usual duties m uch work in the fields and in th e gardens. It is to th e cred it of th e fa rm e rs’ wives th a t they urose to th e em ergency and did w hat seem ed to be the Impos sible. W ith reflections such as th ese In mind we will attem p t to o u tlin e the work done in various lied CrosH o r ganizations of th is vicinity.
