A lthough we have had a
few good tim es we have had a lot of
hardships. We have put up w ith lots
of cold w eath er w ith noth in g hut a
canvas te n t between us and the
sto rm s and, w ith the b are ground un
d er o u r feet. We had a sm all stove
to keep w arm with. A good many
tim es we have been hungry but n ever
th e le s s we are h ere to do o u r bit.
At th e p resen t tim e we a re on per
m uneut d uty h ere in camp. 1 have
a good Job as officers’ h ut orderly.
We are in a b eau tifu l location and we
are having w onderful w eather, Just
like Rummer.
We find it q u ite h ard at first to get
used to th e E nglish ways b ut as we
have been over here nearly th ree
m onths we have begun to get accus
tom ed to th e ir wayH.
I have trav eled a g rea t deal in the
last year. 1 was first sta tio n e d at
V ancouver, th en we moved to C lack
am as, W hile th e re I was sent o ut on
a g u ard d etail to Cle-Elum , W ash
ington. and was th e re a m onth, re
tu rn in g to C lackam as for a m onth,
and th en o u r Journey began.
On th e 11th day of A ugust we
sta rte d for Menlo P ark , C alifornia,
and was th e re ab o u t a m onth. We
w ere only tw enty-five m iles from
F risco and so of course enjoyed the
sig h ts of C alifornia. A fter leaving
C alifo rn ia we w ent to Cam p G reen at
C h arlo tte, N. C., w here we spent at
least two m onths. Near th e first of
N ovem ber >ve moved to th e lust camp
we were In w hile In th e states. We
w ere at Long Island, New Y ork, about
a m onth w hen we sta rte d for France.
W hile a t Long Island we had the
most of o u r w in ter and cold w eather
1 m ade tw o trip s to th e big city of
New York. It Is a w onderful city but
to my mind It does not com pare with
P o rtlan d .
I have been In a good
m any cities since I left P o rtlan d but
th e re is not one th at will come up to
P o rtlan d us an all around city T here
is no place like home.
E ngland Is a b eautiful country. I
like it q u ite well here, m uch b etter
th an F ran ce. I was in F ra n ce two
weeks b u t I h av en t much love for the
co u n try 1 saw w hile there.
I expect to visit the city of London
In th e n ea r fu tu re . They tell me it
Is a w onderful place I hope I get to
see it soon.
