TTOME AND FARM MAfiAZÍNE SECTION 50 A Weekly Page of Poultry Hints to You Here is a Department Full of Bright Ideas For Readers of the Home and Farm Magazine Section. F FO R D young stock th e opportun ity fo r developm ent by rigidly w eeding ou t th e w asters. I have already m entionod th e im portance of doing so in previous articles, b u t I should lik e to em phasize th e necessity o f w eeding out w here th e selection of fu tu re breeders is concerned, th u s le a v in g p len ty of space fo r th e most prom ising chickens. To ham per or retard th e ir gro w th b y allow ing them to b reath e im pure a ir or to ra n on con tam in ated ground will spoil th e c h a r acte ristics th a t are so essen tial to suc cess in those from which it is intended to breed. V ery freq u en tly misshapen, badly colored o r otherw ise fa u lty birds are allow ed to exist to th e detrim en t of the rem ainder. I t is, how ever, p er fectly tru e th a t when such chickens have reached th e age of ten or tw elve w eeks th e tem p tatio n to keep them to killin g age is very g reat, b u t th e initial m istak e w as in keeping them so long. They should h av e been disposed of b e fore th is age. The m ost prom ising chickens are not necessarily those th a t are th e most a t tra c tiv e in appearance. For instance, those w hich a t a very e arly ago have grown th e ir ad u lt plum age and look trim and n eat, alm ost p erfect in th eir prem ature ** finish, ” seldom reaeh the stan d ard size of tho v a rie ty to which they belong; nor do th ey prove of much service when selected for th e breeding pen. I t is b e tte r to keep fo r stock purposes those th a t a re b ig boned, an g u lar and som ew hat u ngainly in ap pearance and seem to bo grow ing rig h t aw ay from th eir feath ers. T hese b ird s are developing th o ir fram e quickly and th e ir in te rn a l organs slowly, and th e more g radual develop m ent ta k e s place in the la tte r , the b e t ter. I t is not alw ays th e v ery early- laying pullets th a t are th e most s u it able for spring breeding. T herefore, th e grow th of tho pullets in tho early stages should be observed, and it will in v ariab ly be found th a t those which m atu re slowly when this stag e is reach ed aro tho more perfect. T here are m any p o u ltry keepers who m ake th e m istake of leaving the selec tion of tho breeders u n til alm ost the actu al tim e of breeding has arrived, w ith tho result th a t it is done so h u r riedly th a t due consideration can not be given to th e necessary ch aracter istics essential in breeding stock. Of course, I do not mean to im ply th a t fu tu re breeders should be selected when th ey are chickens, but an eye should be A k ep t on those th a t show signs o f future value, and it will freq u en tly be found th a t these birds fig u re v ery prom i n en tly when the tim e a rriv er for the fin a l selection. W hen selecting b ird s fo r breeding purposes it is absolutely necessary th a t th e type o f th e p a rtic u la r v ariety should be stric tly observed. The u tility m an is very o ften tem pted to ignore th e stan d ard s an d reg ard them as purely m atters fo r th e fan cier. This, however, is a m istake, and one th a t v ery ofton leads to failu re, since many of these so called a rb itra ry points have economic value, an d when th e stan d ard s—th a t is, ex tern al points— are neg looted it will in v ariab ly be found th a t th e birds will not breod tru e to th eir economic ch aracteristics. — “ P ractical P o u ltry F a rm e r,” in F eath ered Life. I f yon w ish to tr e a t the more mild cases cleanse tho m outh w ith a wash m ade of one tablespoonful creolin ad d ed to four flu id ounces of w ater. In th e caso of a very thick m em brane* h av in g form ed touch the spot w ith s tra ig h t creolin on a swab, being very carefu l to not get any of the drug into the w indpipe or your bird is a dead one. The m em brane can then be rem oved w ithout bleeding. O nly in th e case of very valuable fow ls is it advisable to give tre a tm e n t to th e flock as a whole. The more birds you cure th a t are afflic ted w ith g enu ine roup the more future trouble you w ill have w ith roup. H E BEST q u ality of poultry and eggs w ill comm and the highest prices in the rig h t m arkets. The man who keeps f if ty hens or more should co nstantly study how to put his products up in the best possible form. S ort eggs w ith g re a t care. A b asket of eggs freshly gathered from d ifferen t breeds will contain eggs of several d if fe re n t sizes and colors. D o n 't mix colors and sizes in preparing for m ar ket. I f you do you spoil the appearance of th e whole lot. Seek the m arket th a t ap p reciates tho fine product, finely put up, and e a te r to the high standards of th a t m arket. • • • T here are tw o sides to poultry grow ing as a business. Tho first has to do w ith tho d etails of production, which includes the selection of equipm ent, the p u rchasing o f supplies, the economical use of labor. Tho other side— and th is is too often overlooked—p ertain s to selling. R ight here th e poultrym an has full o pp o rtu n ity to make the most of his business ability. When production costs are fixed, p ro fits are regulated larg ely by tho prices obtained for the goods. An additional cent received for each dozen of eggs or pound of dressed p o u ltry may make tho difference be tw een break in g even or m aking a good p ro fit on th e season’s operations. And th is e x tra am ount is secured only thro u g h the use of good salesm anship. • • • The feeding of g rain constantly will cause the grow th of the b ird s to be checked and m any of those th a t have had a poor s ta rt w ill be undersized and o f poor constitutional vigor at ma tu rity . Now m any of you will say they. T O UP is som ew hat like la grippe in human beings, according to w hat a physician once said when he was called to tre a t an afflicted fam ily. The whole house was sick. All had the sam e m alady, and each one showed d if fe re n t symptoms. To use his own ex pression, “ La grippe is v ery accom m odating. I f you d o n ’t w an t it one w ay you can have it another. ’ ’ W here th ere is a h ard swelling, open and remove th e discharge. We have saved turkeys, which seem to be sub je c t to th is p a rticu lar form of roup m ore th an chickens, by th is method. The fowls should be isolated, and un d er no condition be used fo r breeders. I f th e y a re there will be a flock of chickens constitu tio n ally w eak, and th ere will bo more com plaint of roup next year. T here is a p re tty good oppo rtu n ity to apply th e golden ru le to th is caso in regard to selfing them as soon as they tak o it. W ould you or we lik e to cat chickens th a t have had a disease in d e fin ite ly ! Because there was no out w ard sign in p articu lar u n til a few day s before th ey died is no good rea son th a t th ey were f it for food. T his lack of feed is one of the underlying cause» w hy m any farm ers cannot grow stock or fow ls w ith success— they are so afraid th a t th ey will e a t th e ir heads off, and think the less feed they give the more will be th e ir profits. W ell-fed fowls are the only kind th a t make a real p ro fit. Feed th e chickens and if you are not w illing to do th is you had b etter keep grow ing cotton and stick to your old an tiq u a te d m ethods of do ing things. • • • U tility is th e firs t requisite in any fowl if a p ro fit is to be o b tain ed over the cost of rearing, caring and th e feed ing of th e same. T here are some who do not know th e m eaning of the word u tility , b a t use it as a cloak to dispose of culls th a t do not even possess the m erits of the birds raised carefully by the fancier, and who m any so called u tility breeders a re decrying. B e tte r a good-shaped, strong fowl of fin e plum age th a n some of the under-sized culls th a t are sold as so-called u tility fowls. G radually the A m erican p o u ltry keepers aro w aking up to the fa c t th a t in the long ra n it pays to purchase th e best stock, day-old ehicks or h atch in g eggs. There is too much cheap, haphazard- bred stock being palm ed o ff upon those beginning in ponltry, w ith discouraging results. In a m easure, it is th e begin n e r ’s own fau lt in seeking th e so called bargain counter. e e e I f one cares to keep sta n d a rd bred fowls and enjoys the sport of the poul try shows (of which over 1,200 were held throughout the U nited S ta te s this y ear), as m any of those who raise poul try do, th ere is every opportunity, and when th e breeding lines become estab lished well enough to produce prize w inners, there is a good deal of sa tis faction when orders come in fo r $10 to perhaps $50 or more fo r high grade birds. I t is not m eant to say th a t suc cess is alw ays easy in th e p onltry busi ness, fo r there are often tria ls and trib u latio n s as in all lines of business, and w ith them som etimes comes failure. But w ith the present d ay developm ent and know ledge of poultry cu ltu re it can be considered in nowise called for, and need not be experieneed by th e care ful p o ultry man or ponltry woman. • • • T here are few g reater pleasures th an the pictures from real life of th e small farm set to small fru its and trees, w ith desirable poultry houses and runs, w ith the landscape d o tted w ith standard- bred fo w ls! M ost assuredly th ere are few callings th a t con trib u te so much of real pleasure and com pensation to the square inch. To the office man, broken in h ealth, or to those who would retain th eir health, th ere is no o th er occupa tion th a t will give the same return» and no medicine th a t will b e n e fit those of failing health so winch as the sun shine and open air exercise th a t is thus obtained. This much is assured; but there is one th in g more one possesses I and th a t is independenee. • • • As soon as you have com pleted the brooding of small chieks, p u t th e brood er coops aw ay for next y e a r 's work.
