Improving The Herd
MMX II E T H E R you consider youraelf a
dairym an or not no doubt yon
keep cows and milk them . I f so,
th en you may as well have as good
cows as possible, fo r a good cow tak es
no more stab le room, eats no more hay,
requires no more a tte n tio n th an a very
poor producer.
gg
I t would seem th a t everybody would
w an t b e tte r cows th an ho has, no m a t
te r how good they are. Y et th is is the
exception ra th e r th an th e rule, ju d g
in g by deeds instead o f words. A very
«mail per cen t only have good dairy
sires. A still sm aller per cent endeavor
b y te s t to fin d o u t which cows are
w orthy of a place in th e herd ns breed
in g stock. As long as the scrub bull
and scrub cow ex ist thero w ill be no
herd im provem ent.
An anim al d o esn ’t have to be pedi
greed to be good— and a pedigree is not
alw ays a sure indication of excellence
in dairy production. So in choosing a
bull especially it is necessary to know
w h at his predecessors have been good
for. T here are some very poor pedi
greed d airy stock for sale.
An anim al d o esn ’t have to be pedi
greed to be good— and a pedigree is not
alw ays a sure indication of excellence
in dairy production. So in choosing a
bull especially it is necessary to know
w h at his predecessors have been good
for. T here are some very poor pedi
greed d airy stock fo r sale.
I f the sire came from a good cow and
h is lineage was noted for m ilk produc
tio n , th e chances arc th a t ho w ill im
prove th e herd he heads. B y testin g
and selection the common cow s-can be
rap id ly im proved so th a t it is not neces
sary to buy pure bred stock. B ut it is
useless to buy a good sire and m ake ne
e ffo rt to know w hat cows are th e best
to breed from. It is a slow process of
im provem ent when all cows a re re
tain ed and th eir o ffsp rin g also. The
poorest ones keep d ragging th e record
down.
Besides blood o f dairy excellence it
is, of course, necessary to feed pro p
erly. T im othy hay and o at straw will
not m ake th e best herd on e a rth pro
duce very well. On the oth er hand, a
good d airy ratio n for even a scrub
herd will help a whole lo t a t th e pail
end.
No one can expect as much m ilk from
a herd im properly housed and fed as
from one receiving regular, in tellig en t
a tten tio n . F all fresh cows will do bet
te r th an spring fresh.
I t has been found th a t th e farm er
who made th e im provem ent and p ro fit
was a stu d en t of dairy farm ing. He was
a reader o f dairy lite ra tu re to th e ex
te n t of becoming a disciple of b e tte r
d airying. U ntil a man has am bition to
do b e tte r he never does. W hen he reads
w ith indifference or ridicule h e ’s a
s ta n d p a tte r for whom thero is no hope.
B ut when he gets enthused and begins
to practice w hat he reads th en there
is hope for his herd im provem ent.
