Egg Settings Need To
Be Tested
'O ALLOW a broody hen to sit on
in fe rtile eggs is not an economical
practice. Tne eggs should be t e s t
ed, and all in fe rtile ones rem oved. By
rem oving the in fertile eggs those re
m aining will have a b e tte r chance of
hatching, since there is not the danger
of chilling. To leave in fe rtile eggs in
the nest endangers these co n tain in g live
chicks. As incubation progresses, the
shell of th e in fe rtile egg becomes more
and more ro tten , and there is danger of
the in fertile eggs becom ing broken and
the contents closing tho pores of the
fe rtile eggs, which if th e coating is
com plete, resu lts in the death of the
chick.
In settin g hens it is a good practice
to set a t least fiv e hens a t a time.
W hen th s eggs are tested on the
sevei tit day, the chances are th a t su ffi
cient in fertile eggs will be found th a t
all the fe rtile eggs can be given to four
hens and one of the hens re set.
