Obituaries
David Wayne
Denton
David Wayne Denton,
75, of Heppner, OR, passed
away peacefully at home
on June 15, 2025. He was
a devoted husband, father
and friend, known for his
strength, kindness and a
realism with a great sense
of humor.
At David’s request
there will be no service.
The Dentons moved to
Kinzua, OR in 1946. David
was born Aug. 7, 1949, to
Frank D. Denton and Dena
Bethene Swanson in Walla
Walla, WA.
David attended grade
school at Kinzua, OR,
where he felt fortunate to
be raised in God’s Country
within the Kinzua commu-
nity and all it offered. He
laughed often about his fa-
vorites, like climbing Castle
Rock and stinging nettles
sword fights, his dad rolling
into town on the railroad
and the crew laughing while
watching a large tire rolling
off the hill at a high rate of
speed, bouncing high and
finally landing at the bottom
and hitting a car, until dad
realized his two boys had
rolled the tire, kids all over
town loading up in M. Bor-
ing’s station wagon heading
to Boy Scout activities,
playing baseball, swim-
ming at the mill ponds or
Condon’s pool, golfing but
disqualified after winning
the father-daughter golf
tournament, fishing, and
Dave loved hunting wheth-
er it was squirrels, deer, elk
or just plunking cans. His
eighth-grade class, consist-
ing of three girls and seven
boys, versus the Brookings
freshman class of ‘90. A
lifetime of memories.
The family moved
to Brookings, OR, where
Dave excelled as a catcher
in baseball, enjoyed track
and basketball, and gradu-
ated from Brookings High
School.
David served in the US
Army 1968-1970, stationed
at Rhein Main in Frankfurt,
Germany as a Hawk Missile
fire control operator and
Automatic Weapons repair
in the counter insurgency
division. He was a recip-
ient of National Defense
Service and Good Conduct
medals and received an
honorable discharge SPE4.
He spent eight years
at Brookings Plywood in
all facets of production
and was self-motivated
to learn boiler operations.
He moved to Heppner for
employment with Kinzua
Corporation for 18 years,
as a boiler operator for
production of electricity to
the plant and steam drying
lumber products. He was
promoted to head operator
of the new cogeneration
10-megawatt turbine-steam
generator for production of
electricity for Kinzua Corp.
and PGE—all phases of
production, repair, training
and compliance reporting.
With the closure of
Kinzua Corp., David’s jour-
ney led him to Roseburg
Forest Products as a se-
nior operator of five steam
turbines/three boilers for
generation of electricity,
fired by gas, sanderduct and
waste oil. His experience
was utilized in the startup
of satellite plants at Weed,
CA, and Riddle, OR. He
went to work for the Oregon
Department of Corrections
as a boiler operator in Wil-
sonville. Desiring to return
to Eastern Oregon, he trans-
ferred to the DOC security
department for the startup
of the newly-constructed
prison at Umatilla, OR. He
stayed there for 11 years
and retired early.
David received the
Harrison Hale award and
umpired Babe Ruth Amer-
ican Legion seven years, as
well as high school base-
ball.
He was a lifetime mem-
ber of Heppner Elks Lodge
#358, NRA, Regional Boil-
er Assoc. with a second
class engineering license,
Kinzua Safety committee
and team leader of ODOC
class #142.
Remaining to cherish
David’s memory are his
wife of 44 years, Terri;
two children, Tandi Schatz
(Shane) of Harrisburg,
OR and David Denton Jr.
(Kari) of Shoreline, WA;
six grandchildren, Dani-
al, Emmaleigh, Zackary,
Gretta, Jim and Ruby; three
great-grandchildren; and
his brother, Verlin Denton
(Andrea) of Pendleton.
He was preceded in
death by his parents, Frank
and Bethene Denton, as
well as several aunts and
uncles.
The family asks that
donations be made to Hep-
pner Elks children’s char-
ities and Heppner Pioneer
Memorial Hospice instead
of flowers or other gifts.
Obituaries
Dorothy Mae
Green
Dorothy Mae Green,
101, of Lexington, OR,
passed away on June 12,
2025, at Pioneer Memorial
Hospital, surrounded by her
family. A graveside memo-
rial service will be held on
July 26, 2025, at 11 a.m.
at the Heppner Masonic
Cemetery. All are welcome
to attend.
She was born Septem-
ber 30, 1923, in Heppner,
OR. She grew up in the
town of Eightmile (a town
that no longer exists) near
Heppner. Dorothy was the
third child born to Homer
and Pearl Green. She had
four brothers and two sis-
ters.
Her family was con-
stantly on the move from
farm to farm, renting land
from the Federal Land Bank
to sustain farming for a liv-
ing. Eventually she moved
to “town” to work part time
as a housekeeper and child-
care giver. While doing so,
she completed high school,
graduating with honors in
May of 1942.
After graduating, Dor-
othy continued a career as
a housekeeper, a harvest
cook, and childcare pro-
vider to many long term
employees in the area. This
enabled her to buy a house
in Lexington, where she
moved her mother, aunt
and three brothers from
Eightmile to live with her.
Dorothy loved her fam-
ily. She dedicated herself to
caring for her mother and
siblings when they fell ill.
She never forgot a birthday
and took time to write let-
ters to those she cherished.
She also kept an ongoing
journal that she made daily
entries in for many years.
Her love for cooking,
quilting and gardening
turned into many first place
ribbons over the years at
the county fair. The fruits
of her labors of love will
be cherished by her family
and friends for generations
to come.
Dorothy also was ac-
tive in her community,
volunteering as a Sunday
school teacher. She was
also a member of a square
dancing club, where she
designed outfits and hand-
made them for the team.
Remaining to cher-
ish Dorothy’s memory
are brother Jerry Green;
nieces Wilma (Billie Lou)
Henriques, Diana Grein-
er-Easton, Nancy Mar-
vel, Ellie Green and Betty
Green Voss; and nephew
Virgil Marvel.
Preceding Dorothy in
death are father, Homer
Denver; mother Mary Pearl,
Aunt Mural, sisters Myrtle
Van Schoick and Lucille
Marvel; brothers Harry,
Kenneth and Floyd Green;
nephew Everett Marvel;
and niece Linda Maggi.

Richard ‘Dick’
Sherer
Richard “Dick” Sherer,
cherished husband, father,
brother and friend, passed
away peacefully at Pioneer
Memorial Hospital in Hep-
pner, OR on June 22, 2025
at the age of 87.
A private family ser-
vice will be conducted at a
later date.
Born on June 15, 1938,
in Pendleton, OR, Dick
was the treasured son of
the late Beulah and Harold
“Doc” Sherer. His life was
distinguished by an un-
wavering commitment to
his family, a resilient spirit,
and a reserved strength that
profoundly affected those
around him.
Dick is survived by his
devoted wife of 65 years,
Margo (Bartalamay) Sher-
er, whose love and compan-
ionship formed the corner-
stone of his life. Together,
they raised three sons: Scott
Sherer of Irrigon, OR (wife
Alice), Todd Sherer of Su-
wanee, GA (wife Jennifer),
and Brett Sherer of Tilla-
mook, OR (wife Kristi).
He also leaves behind a
legacy comprising of 10
grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren. He
was a devoted father and a
trusted source of guidance
and wisdom for his family.
Additionally, he is sur-
vived by his loving sis-
ters, Kay Barnhart of Red-
mond, OR and Judy Ripka
of Tillamook, OR, who
shared countless memories
and milestones with him
throughout his life.
Dick’s legacy is one
characterized by grit, ded-
ication, and quiet integri-
ty. He will be profoundly
missed by all who had the
honor of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, the
family requests that do-
nations be made in Dick’s
memory to a charity of your
choice.
