Nichols breaks 800m school record Mustangs power Past Rockets
in Buck Classic
with 8–5 home win

Heppner junior Lily
Nichols led the Mustangs
at the Buck Track Classic
in Pendleton on May 9,
breaking the school record
in the 800 meters with a
time of 2:22.76. The previ-
ous record of 2:24.52 was
set by Hannah Finch in
2022. Nichols also placed
second in the 1500 meters
and participated in Hep-
pner’s 4x400 relay team’s
runner-up finish alongside
Riley Archer, Healy Hisler
and Hallee Hisler.
Hallee Hisler won the
200-meter race and took
second in the 400-meter
race. In the 200 meters, she
surpassed her grandmother
Susan Healy Hisler’s per-
sonal best of 26.2 seconds
from 1972, matching Steph
Payne’s 26.0-second mark
to become the second-fast-
est ever at HHS in the event.
Hallee is now aiming to
break her great-aunt Mau-
reen Healy’s school record
of 25.8 seconds in the 200
meters. She is currently
ranked #2 in the state for
the 200 meters.

third in both the 100 and

On the boys’ side, Chris
Humphreys earned second
in the javelin with a per-
sonal-best throw of 54.03
meters and seventh in the
shot put. Marty Medina
posted personal bests in
both the 800 and 1500,
finishing sixth and seventh,
respectively.
The Heppner girls
earned multiple top-10 fin-
ishes across sprints, dis-
tance, hurdles and field
events, continuing a strong
late-season push.
On Tuesday, the team
traveled to the WM invite.
They next head to John Day
for the Grant Union Invita-
tional this Friday, May 16,
their last meet before 2A
Special District 4 Champi-
onships in Prineville May
23.

Heppner ’s softball
team earned a solid 8–5 vic-
tory over the visiting Pilot
Rock/Nixyaawii Rockets
on Tuesday, May 6, using
timely hitting and strong
pitching to secure the win.
Ciciley Stefani opened
the scoring in the first in-
ning with a solo home run
to center field. The Mus-
tangs took control in the
third when an error by the
Rockets allowed two runs
to score, giving Heppner a
3–1 lead.
The momentum contin-
ued into the fourth inning,
when the Mustangs added
four more runs on six hits.
Katie Spivey launched a
solo homer to left, Stefani
delivered a two-run double,
and later scored herself on a
tag-up, extending the lead.
Maya Payne went the
distance in the circle for
Heppner, allowing nine
hits and five runs—three of
them earned—while strik-
ing out five and walking
four over seven innings.
Spivey led Heppner’s
offense with a perfect 3-for-
3 day at the plate. Stefani
went 2-for-4 with three
RBIs, while Payne and
Avree Lathrop also record-
ed multiple hits. Heppner
finished with 14 hits overall
and turned one double play
on defense.
The Heppner softball
team battled hard in a home
doubleheader against Grant
Union on Friday, May 9,
dropping the first game 4–2
before storming back with
a dominant 20–13 win in
game two.
In game one, a back-
and-forth contest remained
tight until the Prospectors
pulled ahead in the sixth.
After trading runs in the
fourth and fifth innings—
highlighted by an Avree
Lathrop solo homer for
Heppner—Grant Union
used a pair of hits and a
walk to plate two late runs.
Maya Payne pitched all
seven innings for the Mus-
tangs, allowing 10 hits and
four runs, three of them
earned, while striking out
two. Delaney Stefani led
the offense with two hits,
while Lathrop and Kadie
Henrichs each drove in a
run.
The Mustangs bounced
back in explosive fashion in
the second game, riding a
huge offensive performance
from Isabel Payne, who hit
two home runs and drove
in eight runs. After falling
behind early, Heppner tied
the game 11–11 with an
eight-run fifth inning that
included a three-run blast
by Payne. She homered
again in the sixth to cap a
four-run inning that secured
the Mustangs’ win. Hep-
pner pounded out 18 hits
in the game, with multi-hit
efforts from Payne, Maya
Payne, Katie Spivey, Ava
Gerry, and Avree Lathrop.
Spivey also homered, and
Gerry added two doubles.
Maya Payne pitched
into the seventh and earned
the win despite allowing
13 runs, only four of them
earned, while striking out
four. Heppner’s bats and
patience at the plate proved
the difference, with the
team drawing seven walks.
The Mustangs returned
to action at home on Tues-
day for a matchup with
Weston-McEwen. They
will host Elgin/Imbler for a
doubleheader May 20.
