The South Morrow Art
Center (SMAC) has offi-
cially opened its doors in
Heppner, offering a fresh
and welcoming space for
creativity, connection and
community art.
Located at 188 West
Willow Street in the historic
Heppner Gazette building,
SMAC is now a vibrant
hub for artistic expression
in Morrow County. Led by
Executive Director Andrea
Nelson and Assistant Di-
rector Jamie Mullins, the
center aims to serve artists
and makers of all ages and
skill levels.
“We want SMAC to
be a place where everyone
feels welcome to come
in, explore art and just
create,” said Nelson. “It’s
about building community
through creativity.”
The center features
open studio hours where
visitors can drop in and
work on projects at their
own pace. With a wide vari-
ety of materials available—
including paint, yarn, air-
dry clay, beads, paper, oil
pastels, and more—guests
can choose from suggested
art activities or bring their
own ideas to life. Open stu-
dio sessions are currently
available on Wednesdays
and Thursdays for either a
$5 or $10 drop-in fee.
In addition to open
studio time, SMAC of-
fers classes taught by local
artists, covering a range
of subjects from painting
and pottery to crafting and
mixed media.
This Friday will feature
a “Sip and Paint Night”

DEADLINE:
MONDAYS
AT 5PM
On a sunny Saturday
in April, about 50 walkers
arrived at Hager Park by 10
a.m. to provide support for
MSFocus.
Walk organizer Barb
Orwick began the walk
with a prayer then sent the
group on the one-mile tour
of downtown Heppner.
Although there were
three planned stops for
pictures, Orwick said the
group was “like herding
cats.” Some had ball games,
Heppner Clean Up or other
activities to go to.
Not to worry, though;
Orwick said this is how
the MSFocus Walk was
designed.
Most of the walkers
gathered at Bucknam’s Tav-
ern at the end of the walk
for a no-host brunch. More
information was available,
along with quizzes and
prizes.
“Overall,” said Orwick,
“it was a fun, profitable
morning.”
Orwick said she is
grateful for all the people
who showed up and gave
money to fight with the MS
warriors to “live their best
lives.” Some local busi-
nesses contributed financial
aid for the walk, including
Bank of Eastern Oregon,
Les Schwab and Murray’s
Drug.
Dale Bates took photo-
graphs, Steve and Tia Eg-
bers organized “swag” and
Bucknam’s Tavern opened
early to provide a special
brunch.
The Multiple Sclerosis
Foundation, or MSFocus,
has several outlets to pro-
mote healthy living. The
magazine highlights assist-
ed technologies, diet and
emotional help to navigate
this disease. The website
also has online courses
in chair exercise, expert
neurologist discussions and
grants for necessary home
improvements. Anyone
needing support in their
MS journey is encouraged
to check it out.
