Heppner Mustangs triumph over Pilot Rock
By Brian Bunch
The Heppner/Ione
Mustangs secured a deci-
sive 13-3 victory against
the Pilot Rock Rockets
on Tuesday, April 22. The
Mustangs’ offense was fir-
ing on all cylinders, racking
up 11 hits and capitalizing
on Pilot Rock’s pitching
struggles.
Alakae Rodriguez led
the charge with three runs
on three hits with two RBIs,
joined by Caylan Proudfoot
with three runs on one hit
and three walks with one
RBI. Jace Wilson added
two runs on two hits with an
RBI, while Andrew Lindsay
tallied two runs as a courte-
sy runner on Ryan Haugen’s
two hits. Shad Greenup
earned two RBIs on one hit
and one walk.
On the pitching side,
R. Haugen earned the win,
pitching four innings, al-
lowing three runs on four
hits with one walk and strik-
ing out seven. Caleb George
closed out the game, giving
up three hits in three score-
less innings with two walks
and six strikeouts.
Down the Final
Stretch
With eight games left
in the season (seven league,
one non-league) the Mus-
tangs are looking to make
a run and gain momentum
going into the postseason.
The next five games the
Mustangs will host in Hep-
pner before going on the
road for the last three of the
season. April 29 they hosted
Pilot Rock at 4 p.m. before
a non-league tilt against
3A-SD2 Burns/Crane on
May 2 at 4 p.m.
Still locked into third
place in the league, the
Mustangs (6-3 league, 9-5
overall) have their work cut
out for them as two of the
Holly Rebekah plans May Day meal and games
In conjunction with
Lexington’s May Day Fes-
tivities on May 3, Holly
Rebekah Lodge will have
a loaded baked potato meal
at the lodge hall. The meal
will go from 10:30 a.m. un-
til the potatoes are sold out.
For only $5, a person
may purchase a large baked
potato with the follow-
ing toppings: chili, grated
cheese, onions, bacon bits,
sour cream and butter. Extra
toppings will be available
for a small fee.
Following the meal, at
approximately 3:30 p.m.,
the ever-popular Bingo
will begin. Again, the cost
is only $5 for a packet of
10 Bingo cards, which will
be used for 14 games plus
three blackout games. Win-
ners may even walk away
with a prize.
The proceeds from
these two events will go
toward the trade school/
vocational school schol-
arship which is given to
graduating seniors from
both Heppner and Ione
high schools. All ages are
welcome to come to either
or both of these events.
Also May 3, the Mini
Bakers from Heppner will
be having a bake sale up-
stairs at the Lodge Hall. All
funds raised from their bake
sale will go to the Wildland
Fire Fighters. This will also
start at 10:30 a.m., so be
sure and stop by and pur-
chase some goodies from
these busy bakers.
The Lexington Holly
Rebekah Lodge is located
at 135 W. Main Street, Lex-
ington—look for balloons.

last three league opponents
are in the top four in the
league standings. But with
only three weeks left in the
season, there are still plenty
of big-time match-ups to
be played from the top to
the bottom of 2A/1A-SD7.
Will chaos ensue? Will the
Mustangs find themselves
at the top of the league
when it matters? Only time
will tell….
Heppner sweeps Ladycats
in high-scoring softball
The Heppner Mustangs
came out swinging in a
doubleheader sweep over
Union/Cove on Friday,
riding dominant offensive
performances from Isabel
Payne and Kadie Henrichs
to 13-8 and 21-4 victories,
respectively.
In Game 1, Heppner
rallied from a 4-0 deficit be-
hind a clutch performance
from Payne, who drove in
four runs on two hits. She
launched a three-run homer
to center field in the fourth
to tie the game and added
an RBI single in the fifth as
the Mustangs surged ahead.
Union/Cove retook the
lead briefly in the bottom
of the fourth, but Heppner
exploded for five runs in
the fifth, highlighted by
Ava Gerry’s two-run single.
Payne added her second
home run of the game in
the sixth, part of a three-run
inning that sealed the win.
Payne also went the
distance in the circle, allow-
ing eight hits and eight runs
(six earned) while striking
out nine. Gerry led Heppner
at the plate, going 3-for-4.
Payne and Ciciley Stefani
also recorded multiple hits.
Union/Cove’s Kali
Amy was a bright spot for
the home team, going 3-for-
3 with three RBIs. Hannah
Robbins added a two-run
home run.
In Game 2, Heppner’s
offense erupted for 16 runs
in the third inning alone,
turning a close game into
a runaway 21-4 win. Hen-
richs led the charge with
four hits and four RBIs,
including a two-run double
and a pair of RBI singles.
The third-inning bar-
rage included contributions
from nearly every Mustang
hitter. Isabel Payne drove
in three with a single, Del-
aney Stefani doubled in
three more, and Avree Lath-
rop, Makenzie Maben, and
Ava Gerry each added RBI
singles. In total, Heppner
racked up 24 hits in the
game.
Payne again started in
the circle, allowing just four
hits and one earned run over
five innings while striking
out four.
Amanda Lawyer led
Union/Cove with two hits,
and Amy added an RBI. De-
spite turning a double play
defensively, the Ladycats
couldn’t contain Heppner’s
bats.
The Mustangs traveled
to face Pilot Rock/Nixy-
aawii on Tuesday. They will
host Vale in a doubleheader
this Friday.
