Good News Only by Doris Brosnan
Kristy Crowell is proud to share: “Our grandson,
Nash Moore, was chosen as one of the nominees of the
‘Ed Dougherty Football Award.’ This is for outstanding
football players in Arizona.
“Nash is a senior at Buena High School in Sierra
Vista, AZ. He has been their quarterback for four years;
this year he threw 32 touchdown passes and passed for a
total of 2,112 yards.
“We went down last month and watched his last three
regular games, including ‘Senior Night,’ when we all went
out on the field and he introduced us. The team advanced
to the playoffs, where they went farther than the school
has ever gone before.”
Early morning wandering thoughts: How did gnomes
become so ubiquitous, especially at Christmas time? (Has
“elf on the shelf” been usurped by “gnome in the home”?)
And untucked shirts and blouses—now the fashion, says
who? (Have belt manufacturers gone out of business or
had to cut way back on production?) And while wandering
and wondering: Close-cropped and “five o’clock shadow”
beards and mustaches have become de rigueur, right?
Everyone is invited to share tidbits of positive mo-
ments. One idea is to share stories of children’s antics and/
or words of wisdom as they react to this holiday season.

On Dec. 11, the Hep-
pner schools hosted their
annual winter concert,
showcasing the talents of
students from kindergarten
through eighth grade.
The evening was filled
with festive music, holi-
day spirit and a uniquely
Heppner twist that left the
audience smiling and sing-
ing along.
The concert opened
with students from each
grade performing Christ-
mas classics they had been
diligently practicing in mu-
sic class. Favorites like “Up
on the Rooftop,” “Deck the
Halls,” “Jingle Bell Rock,”
and “Rockin’ Around the
Christmas Tree” set a cheer-
ful tone for the evening.
The eighth-period band
stole the spotlight with its
creative mashup, “Imperial
Bells,” blending the dark
and dramatic “Darth Vader
Imperial March” from Star
Wars with the holiday clas-
sic “Carol of the Bells.” The
unexpected combination
brought laughs, applause
and plenty of holiday fun.
To wrap up the con-
cert, kindergarten through
sixth-grade students came
together for a finale that
celebrated their community.
They performed “12 Days
of Heppner Christmas,”
a localized version of the
classic holiday tune. Each
verse humorously reflected
life in Heppner, with lyrics
like:
For the twelfth Heppner
Christmas, my family gave
to me:
Twelve months for fishing,
Eleven days of planting,
Ten four-point bucks,
Nine holes for golfing,
Eight seconds riding,
Seven inches snowing,
Six decades ranching,
Five 4-H steers!
Four combines for harvest,
Three football titles,
Two months of calving,
And a barrel horse that’s
fast as can be!
The creative song was
a hit with the audience,
blending humor and pride
in Heppner’s agricultural
roots, outdoor activities and
community traditions.
The concert was a
heartwarming celebration
of the holiday season, a
showcase of student talent
and a joyful reminder of the
unique spirit of Heppner.
