The Heppner Mustang
football team won their
Blue Mountain Conference
game against the Stanfield
Tigers by the score of 42-
28. The Mustangs (6-1
overall, 3-0 BMC) won the
game despite not having
quarterback/safety Landon
Mitchell playing and turn-
ing the ball over three times
to the Tigers. Landon broke
a collarbone in the game
against Riverside/Ione. He
had successful surgery and
will be back for basketball
season.
The Mustangs scored
the first four times they
had the ball in the game.
Their first score came as
new starting quarterback
Mason Orem led a nine-
play drive to paydirt when
Caden George ran the ball
in from 4 yards out for the
touchdown. That gave the
Mustangs a 6-0 lead early
in the game.
Stanfield scored
quickly on their first
drive. The Mustangs came
right back with a score of
their own when Hayden
McMahon raced 63 yards
for a touchdown. That made
the score 12-8 in favor of
the Mustangs.
Once again, the Tigers
quickly scored to take the
lead 14-12, but that lead
was short lived. Orem led
the Mustangs on a six-
play drive to score again
as Cameron Proudfoot ran
the ball 37 yards for the
touchdown. Caden George
threw the ball to Orem
for the 2-pt. conversion
to make the score 20-14
Mustangs.
On the next Stanfield
possession, Nick Wenberg
intercepted a pass to give
the Mustangs great field
position near mid field. On
the very next play Hayden
McMahon outran the Tiger
defense for a 45-yard
touchdown. That made the
score 26-14 at the end of the
first quarter.
The Tigers went on a
long drive, but the Mustang
defense stopped them on
downs at the Heppner six-
yard line. The Mustangs
took over but fumbled the
ball to give Stanfield great
field position. Stanfield
took advantage and scored
on the next play to pull
closer by the score of 26-22
midway through the second
quarter.
The teams traded
possessions for the rest of
the quarter and the score
was 26-22 at halftime.
Heppner kicked off
to start the second half. On
a Stanfield running play,
Landon McMahon caused a
fumble that Caden George
scooped up and ran 33 yards
for a Mustang touchdown.
Caden ran in the 2-pt.
conversion to make the
score 34-22.
Stanfield went on
a long drive, but it was
halted when Cameron
Proudfoot intercepted the
Tiger quarterback. The next
Heppner drive was halted
when they fumbled the ball
to Stanfield. The Tigers
went on to score again to
make it 34-28 as the third
quarter came to an end.
The next Heppner
drive went deep into Tiger
territory and was stopped
again with another Mustang
fumbl e. The Heppner
defense stepped up and

out. Caden scored the 2-pt.
conversion on a run to give
the Mustangs a 42-28 lead.

the road to face off against
Stanfield’s Tigers. Despite
an intense battle at the net
against Stanfield’s pow-
erful hitters, the girls ulti-
mately fell short. Although
Heppner did not secure
the win, their efforts im-
pressed Coach Wilson. Our
girls matched Stanfield’s
high-energy hits and net
play, making it an exciting
and challenging game.

14, 2023, Heppner trav-

the Mustangs started strong
but struggled to finish. The

moved well but struggled
to stop their opponent’s big
hitters.
