Sunday, Sept. 10.
Community members
honored the fallen firefight-
ers and other first respond-
ers of the 9/11 tragedy by
climbing 110 flights of
stairs.
The event began at 7:45
a.m. as fire trucks drove
through downtown Hep-
pner in a silent parade.
The trucks made their
way to the Morrow County
Fairgrounds, where open-
ing ceremonies began at 8
a.m. including raising the
flag, a prayer for the fallen
and a speaker explaining
the event.
A Fireman’s Breakfast
began at 8 a.m. At 9 a.m.
firefighters and members
of the community began
climbing 110 flights of
stairs to remember those
who lost their lives that
fateful Tuesday.
Kids’ activities and
crafts were also available
while the climbing was in
progress.
There was a silent auc-
tion at 10 a.m. Auction
items were donated from a
variety of local businesses.
All money raised will
go to the South Morrow
County fire departments.

Boardman City council

area. He is currently in
police academy and will
graduate this month.
“I’m ready to come
back here and get to work
and start serving my com-
munity the best way I can,”
said Navarro.
“We’re proud that
we’re hiring folks that have
lived, raised and graduated
here,” added Stokoe.
Way is a certified of-
ficer with five years’ law
enforcement experience in
both Umatilla and Morrow
counties. He has lived in
Boardman for five years.
He joined BPD at the be-
ginning of the month.
Stutzman lives in Hep-
pner and joined the Board-
man police about a month
ago. He is scheduled to
go to the academy in De-
cember.
“We’re very excited
to have these gentlemen on
board,” said Stokoe.
Stokoe also told the
council that they promoted
a school resource officer
(SRO) from within the
department. Cory Rosen is
Boardman’s new SRO.
Stephen Munkers of
Irrigon spoke during the
public comment portion of
the meeting, saying he was
there as both a citizen and
a member of the Morrow
County Health District
Board.
“As a citizen of Irri-
gon, we hear rumors. And
we like to be sure that these
are facts, not rumors,” said
Munkers. He said rumors
about the health district
were spreading, and he
urged council members to
attend MCHD meetings
and have open dialogue.
While Munkers did not
specifically say what ru-
mors he was referring to or
what he wanted to dialogue
to be about, the health dis-
trict and Boardman Fire
Rescue District have been
locked in conflict over
Boardman ambulance ser-
vices for more than a year.
“There’s only one way
to really resolve conflict,
and that’s to talk,” he said.
He also offered the
council a handout regard-
ing health district accom-
plishments over the past
year.
The next meeting of
the Boardman City Coun-
cil is scheduled for Oct. 3
at 7 p.m. Other upcoming
events include the Board-
man Chamber of Com-
merce luncheon Sept. 20
at noon, the City, County,
Port meeting Sept. 20 at
5:30 p.m., and the Board-
man Planning Commission
Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.
