Sharon states that she is very proud of what her daughter has accom- plished with her yard and home with her hard work. -Photo by Kay Proctor By Kay Proctor Heppner’s Yard of the Month recognition for July goes to Theresa Jones. The home at 220 W. Willow was the site of an older home that sat vacant after being purchased by neighboring Randall Peter- son. Peterson had the home demolished and the lot sat empty for years. Theresa asked Peterson if he would sell it; he would and did, and her work began. After leveling and foundation work, a man- ufactured home was ma- neuvered into place. Prior to that, Theresa bought a shed in Pendleton, disman- tled it, and reassembled it on her lot. She uses this for her wood shop, which is her favorite place in her backyard. Sitting on a semi-grav- eled, dead-end and quiet street meant lots of terrace work to do to create a lev- el yard. Using landscape blocks and large rectangle pavers, Theresa created a sloped path through the front terracing, and then planted the beds along the terrace with perennials and shrubs, mulching them in. Her favorite is her Weeping Cherry tree. Other plantings are roses, hostas, two healthy yuccas, two older lilacs and rhododen- drons. More terracing behind the house was done with basalt rock, all found on the property. Found and gifted old bricks are used in sev- eral areas and a fire pit sits below the back terrace. A little arched bridge between a fence that Theresa made of some free posts leads to a gazebo, with an angel garden nearby. Shaped beds Lorraine Ruth Bates— Lorraine Ruth Bates, 94, of Condon passed away July 17, 2023. She was born October 29, 1928. Arrangements are pending with Sweeney Mortuary. A full obituary will follow in next week’s Gazette-Times. are topped with river rock. Theresa laid realistic but artificial grass for her back lawn because her lawn- mower didn’t fit over the little bridge, so now some vacuuming is needed. The front lawn was started with grass seed which did not turn out well, so sod was placed. Theresa always wanted a wishing well, and there is one in the corner. Theresa does have future plans such as a metal sculpted tree on the side of the home that faces the street, a waterfall and railings for the sloped path to the woodshop. Since deer had claimed the empty lot for years, they returned to sample the new plantings. For some reason, no deer have both- ered things this year, but two large bullsnakes have visited. She did have goats to keep weeds down, but they are at a new home now. The lot has a cut bank against the hillside where remnants of some sort of building show. There is also some low-grade opal in the bank and Theresa found obsidian when working the grounds. A friend found a large brass ring when doing some groundwork and, since they discovered it, Theresa let them take it home. While she had profes- sionals do work and other people including boyfriend, Richard St. Clair, helping out, Theresa worked solo on many of the projects, just figuring out what and how to do them. She states that she is not a gardener, and had never landscaped be- fore, but imagined a vision of what she wanted and ac- complished it, enjoying the results. She recommends others try that process be- cause “they can make it happen with hard work.” Theresa grew up in Ti- gard and has worked at the Heppner Post Office as a USPO Clerk for eight years. Her daughter, Jamie, lives in the area, and son, Rom- ney, lives in Arizona, as do her parents, Bob and Sharon Jones, former Heppnerites. Yard of the Month is co-sponsored by the Hep- pner Volunteers, MCGG Green Feed & Seed store and the City of Heppner.
