Johnny Collin Umatilla National For- est Supervisor Eric Watrud announced Thursday that Johnny Collin has been selected as the new Walla Walla District Ranger, with an anticipated start date to- ward the end of July. Collin, an Ione graduate, currently serves as a district ranger on the Sanpete Ranger District of the Manti-La Sal Nation- al Forest. As an eastern Oregon native from Ione, Collin has extensive knowledge of the northeast Oregon and southeast Washington landscapes. Collin has a bachelor’s degree in Forest Engineering from Oregon State University. “I am excited to return to the Umatilla National Forest and work with the local communities,” Collin said. “I look forward to meeting the District and Forest staff and working collaboratively with the public and our partners throughout the area.” Collin replaces Aaron Gagnon, who was selected as the Deputy Forest Su- pervisor on the Umatilla National Forest in June. Collin brings a variety of experience to the Umatilla National Forest, including leadership experience, a strong timber management background, recreation management, and firefight- ing experience. Collin also has worked with a variety of Tribal governments, county commissioners, partners, public stakeholders and other federal agencies. Collin has served as the Sanpete District Ranger on the Manti-La Sal Forest since 2020. In this role, Collin is responsible for leading a geographical- ly dispersed organization across boundaries, manag- ing a complex landscape, leading fire management efforts to protect commu- nities and working closely with a variety of external stakeholders. Prior to being selected for the Sanpete District Ranger position permanent- ly, Collin served as the Act- ing Sanpete District Ranger in 2019. Collin also brings leadership experience from a temporary district ranger assignment on the Spanish Fork Ranger District of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, which he completed in 2022. Prior to his district ranger positions with the Forest Service, Collin spent his entire career on the Umatilla National Forest. He served as a supervisory forester on the Pomeroy Ranger District, where he was responsible for over- seeing the planning and implementation of the tim- ber management program for the northern half of the Forest. He also worked in various timber positions on the Heppner and North Fork John Day Ranger Districts and spent time during the early parts of his career as a firefighter. “The Umatilla is fortu- nate to have such a highly qualified individual join our forest leadership team,” Watrud said. “Johnny’s ex- perience actively managing National Forest lands will complement the priority work the Forest has under- way and the interests of the communities and partners that we serve.” Collin will move to the Walla Walla area. In his free time, Collin enjoys spend- ing time outdoors hunting, fishing and skiing.
