Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, March 1, 2023 -- SEVEN Mustang wrestlers overcome weather, can- celations to compete at state. -Continued from PAGE ONE Cade Cunningham Zachary Brown Saul Lopez added. “It was an experi- ence for sure.” Cavan-Harris, wres- tling at 195 pounds, started the tournament by winning by fall over Mathew Chap- man of Kennedy in the first round. He then won by fall over Lee Brainard of Oakridge in the quar- terfinal. He fell to Ash Blomstrom of Toledo in the semifinal match but rallied to win by fall over Clancy Rutledge of Culver in the consolation semifi- nal match. His tournament run ended when he lost by decision (9-5) to Malachi Hansen of Central Linn in the third-place match. Zach Brown, wrestling at 138 pounds, won round one by medical forfeit and advanced to the quarter- final, where he won by decision (8-4) over Draven March of Nestucca. Brown then lost by decision (6-3) in the semifinal and suf- fered another loss by deci- sion (5-3) in the consolation round. Saul Lopez wrestled at 138 pounds. He received a bye in his first round but then lost by tech fall to Nic Kaufman of Toledo. He received another bye in consolation round two. He then lost consolation round three by major decision (15-4) to Aaron Martin of Glendale. Cade Cunningham, wrestling at 220 pounds, received a bye in his first round. He then lost by fall to Logan Clayburn of Myr- tle Point in the quarterfinal match. Cunningham won his next two matches, by fall over Howard Lewelling of Glendale in consolation round two and by decision over Rylan Cox of Grant Union/Prairie City in con- solation round three. He finished his run in the state tournament by losing by fall to Gunnar McDowell of Enterprise/Wallowa in the consolation semifinal. The Gazette-Times pre- viously reported in error that Lady Mustang Journey Cavan-Harris qualified for the women’s state tourna- ment. Cavan-Harris was indeed the first Heppner female wrestler to place at the district level, placing fourth. However, she did not qualify for state, as only the top three wrestlers advanced. The editor apol- ogizes for the error. Ione players receive all-league honors Several Ione/Arlington players were selected for Big Sky all-league teams at the recent district cham- pionships. Named to first team for the boys was senior Marcus Radcliffe. Selected for second team was senior Bryce Rollins. Receiving an honorable mention was senior Carson Eynetich. On the girls’ side, Delani Stefani was named to first team, while Najiah Knight and Vicky DeLa- Torre both received honor- able mentions. Mustangs advance to final eight in state championships The Heppner Mus- tang boys basketball team punched their ticket to the OSAA 2A State Basketball Championships by defeat- ing the Oakland Oakers 52-43. The Mustangs (20-5) will play in the first game of the tournament at the Pend- leton Convention Center on Thursday, March 2, at 1:30 p.m. against the Manna- house Academy Lions. The Lions (25-2) finished first in the Northwest League and beat Bandon in a playoff game to advance to Pend- leton. The Mustangs traveled to Oakland to play the Oak- ers in a small gym common- ly referred to as the “Nut House” for how loud and crazy it can get. The first- round playoff game was played in front of a packed house of Oaker fans who loudly supported their team. Quite a large group of Hep- pner parents and fans made the long trip to Oakland to support the Mustangs. Their cheering certainly helped the Mustang team through- out the game. The long trip didn’t appear to slow the Mustang team down as they jumped out to a quick 6-1 in the first two minutes of the game. Heppner kept the pressure on and led 14-8 at the end of the first quarter. The Mus- tangs continued to score early in the second quarter and extended their lead to 22-14 with two minutes left in the first half. Oakland went on a small run and then scored a basket at the buzzer to cut the Mustang lead to 24-22 at halftime. Heppner kept rolling throughout the third quarter and pushed their lead to 32-25 with three minutes to play in the quarter. The Mustang defensive pressure continued to slow Oakland down and with only 20 sec- onds left in the third quarter the Mustangs had their largest lead of the game at 40-29. The Oakers scored near the end of the quarter to cut the Mustang lead to 40-31 as the fourth quarter started. Oakland made a run at the Mustangs and pulled to within four points at 42-38 with four minutes left in the game. Heppner held strong and extended their lead to 48-40 with two minutes to play. Oakland was forced to foul the Mustangs and send them to the free throw line. The Mustangs made several key free throws down the stretch to keep the Oakers from getting any closer. Heppner won the game by the score of 52-43. A balanced scoring attack for the Mustangs Heppner Housing Authority to meet The next meeting of the Heppner Housing Author- ity for the Heppner Senior Center will be Tuesday, March 7, at 4 p.m. in the St. Patrick’s Senior Center dining room.
