Dorothy E.
Stefani
Dorothy E. Stefani, 94, of
Ione died
Thurs-
day, Dec.
8, 2022,
at CHI St.
Anthony
Hospital
in Pend-
leton, OR. A funeral service
and luncheon will be held
at Valby Lutheran Church
at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec.
17, followed by concluding
service and burial at High
View Cemetery, both in
Ione.
Dorothy E. Bergstrom
Stefani was born on Jan. 14,
1928, in Heppner, to parents
Carl and Esther Bergstrom.
Dorothy grew up on her
family farm in Gooseberry,
just outside of Ione, with
her parents and four broth-
ers, Arthur, Norman, Ro-
land and Walter. As a child
she attended school in a
little one-room schoolhouse
there in Gooseberry but
would later attend school
in Ione starting in the fourth
grade through high school.
Dorothy enjoyed a very
active social life in her high
school years and was cho-
sen to be a princess at the
Morrow County Fair and
Rodeo. After graduating in
1945, Dorothy moved to
Portland, OR and lived with
relatives while working for
the phone company. On
Sept. 27, 1947, she married
her long-time love Arthur
Stefani at the Mount Tabor
Lutheran church in Port-
land. Dorothy and Arthur
had grown up together and
it was fabled that while they
were babies, their mother’s
had even foretold their fu-
ture wedding.
Dorothy and Arthur set-
tled in Ione and started their
family. Their eldest son,
Jerry, was born in 1949,
followed by daughters,
Teresa (1951) and Teena
(1956), and son, Dennis,
born in 1962. The family
spent many years farming
in Ione and ran several
local businesses. Once her
kids had grown up, Dorothy
drove the school bus for
Ione schools, and retired
after 30 years. In addition
to driving the school bus,
Dorothy took over the rural
mail route from her mother-
in-law, Cecil Stefani, and
drove an 81-mile loop three
times a week to the local
farms and ranches until her
retirement at the age of 85.
Dorothy’s pride and joy
was her family. A devoted
wife, mother, grandmother
and sister, Dorothy always
made sure that her home re-
mained the center gathering
spot. Her door was always
open, and she loved to host.
From family Christmas to
birthdays and other holi-
days, she made sure that
every visit from her family
was a cause for celebration.
Her family remembers the
beautiful Christmas tree
that would always shine
brightly in the center of her
front window, with all of
the presents piled around.
For Halloween, they recall
the dozens of bags filled
with candy to ensure ev-
ery child who visited got
plenty of treats. Even with
such a large family, she
never worried about accom-
modating everyone; she
would always say, “Just get
here and we will figure it
out.” Dorothy always found
room to make everyone feel
welcome. In addition to her
home, Dorothy loved to
support her family in any
way she could. She went
out of her way to be front
and center to cheer her kids
and grandkids on at their
sporting events, celebrate
their achievements and
honor their milestones.
In 1992 she lost her
husband Arthur to cancer.
In their 40-plus years of
marriage, they were rare-
ly apart and spent a lot
of their time hosting and
visiting family. After Ar-
thur’s passing, Dorothy
continued the traditions
that were so important to
them and maintained her
deep connections to the

Welcome
community. Dorothy was a
regular fixture at the home
basketball games at the high
school. She loved to go on
long walks and work in her
yard. As she got older, one
of her favorite things was to
visit with her many friends
and learn all about the lat-
est news. Everyone who
knew Dorothy, knew she
had a sweet tooth, and she
always made sure to have
something sweet around,
not just to indulge herself
but to have something to
offer a visitor who might
stop by unexpectedly, or for
her young grandkids who
loved to stop in just to say
hi and give her a big hug.
Dorothy was commit-
ted to her Lutheran faith.
She attended the historic
Valby Lutheran Church,
founded in 1886, her en-
tire life and would always
make a point of being pres-
ent for Sunday service as
long as she was able. She
was always very proud of
that little church, the white
building with the bright red
roof that sat so distinctly
amongst the wheat fields
there in Gooseberry. Doro-
thy lived nearly the entirety
of her 94 years in Ione. She
was described by those
who knew her as strong,
hard-working, loving and
always had something pos-
itive to say. She always
took good care of herself,
she loved to have her hair
done, her nails painted and
loved a spritz of her favorite
perfume. She was steadfast
in her will to maintain her
independence and her home
for as long as she could.
She always greeted every-
one with a smile, and she
always enjoyed a chuckle
at a good joke or memory.
Dorothy will be remem-
bered for her beautiful, kind
spirit and her devotion to
her family, her friends and
to her beloved community.
Dorothy is preceded
in death by her parents,
Carl and Esther Bergstrom;
brothers, Arthur Bergstrom,
Norman Bergstrom, Roland
Bergstrom and Walter Berg-
strom; spouse, Arthur Ste-
fani; son, Jerry Stefani; and
son-in-law, Jeffrey Turner.
Dorothy is survived by
her daughter, Teresa Turner
of Tigard, OR; daughter,
Teena Fetterhoff (Stanley
Fetterhoff) of Pendleton;
son, Dennis Stefani (Misti
Stefani) of Ione; grandchil-
dren, Danielle Stefani, Jes-
sica Hite, Ben Turner, Zach
