The Oregon East Sym-
phony’s annual Holiday
Music Festival will return
on Sunday, Dec. 11, at the
Vert Auditorium, located
at 480 SW Dorion Ave. in
Pendleton. An ecumenical
celebration of the holiday
season through song, the
Holiday Music Festival
features a variety of com-
munity music ensembles in
addition to the Oregon East
Symphony. General admis-
sion to the concert is free.
OES Assistant Conduc-
tor Zack Banks will lead a
string orchestra in perform-
ing Alan Hovhaness’s Sym-
phony No. 49 (Christmas).
Hovhaness was a prolific
Armenian-American com-
poser who spent the last
three decades of his life
residing in Seattle. His
compositions incorporated
a variety of influences from
across the world, including
Indian and Asian music, Ar-
menian chant, Renaissance
polyphony, whale songs
and medieval plainsong.
Banks, who also serves
as Principal Cellist and
Education Director for
OES and Conductor for
the Grande Ronde Sympho-
ny Orchestra, says, “The
Oregon East Symphony is
thrilled to help ring in the
holiday season, and we look
forward to sharing the stage
with two other fantastic lo-
cal groups. The Christmas
Symphony by Alan Hov-
haness is written for string
orchestra, and the piece
serves as a musical setting
for the story of the birth of
Christ. The work comes in
four equally captivating
movements and carries the
unique flavor of this rarely
performed American-Ar-
menian composer from the
twentieth century.”
The concert will also
feature Equinox Little Big
Band, a jazz combo led by
Pendleton School District
music instructors Andy
Cary and Emily Muller-
Cary; Our Songs Are Live,
a traditional drumming,
singing and dancing en-
semble from the Confeder-
ated Tribes of the Umatilla
Indian Reservation led by
cultural historian Fred Hill;
the Pendleton Brass Quin-
tet featuring Steve Muller,
Andy Cary, Jill Scanlan,
Kaitlyn McMasters and
Gary Ferguson, and Christ-
mas carol singalongs led
by Adam Lange, worship
music leader with Christ
Church in La Grande, OR.
