Virtual literacy tutoring program
comes to Morrow County schools
A program called Ig-
nite! Reading has partnered
with four Morrow County
schools as part of a new
national expansion. Ig-
nite! Reading is now used
in Heppner Elementary,
as well as AC Houghton
Elementary in Irrigon and
Sam Boardman and Windy
River elementary schools
in Boardman.
Students in Ignite! re-
ceive 15 minutes of daily,
high-dosage, one-on-one
virtual instruction from tu-
tors in the using a “scripted,
evidence-based curriculum
developed by top reading
researchers.” The program
is now serving 1,100 stu-
dents in schools across five
states with over 200 tutors
in its final pilot before it
begins to scale.
In an attempt to reverse
pandemic-related learning
losses, Ignite! Reading’s
2021-2022 students re-
corded an average of 2.4
weeks of reading progress
for every one week in the
program. Nearly one-third
of students made three or
more weeks of reading
progress per week.
“The kids are only gone
from their room for 20 min-
utes. What other interven-
tion can you allocate that
little time to and actually
see this amount of growth?”
said Jill Ledbetter, princi-
pal of AC Houghton Ele-
mentary School in Irrigon.
“Teachers are seeing the
success and now they are
asking, ‘Well how many
more can we send?’”
As educators worked
to reverse the learning
losses from COVID-19,
Ignite’s 2021-22 school
partnerships focused on Ti-
tle I schools in both district
and charter environments
spanning urban and rural
contexts. Ignite’s virtual
format allows every tutor
to be continually developed
and monitored by Ingite’s
team of literacy coaches,
ensuring that its reading
fundamentals curriculum is
delivered with high-fidelity.
