Mustangs Fall to TigerScots

Thursday, Oct. 6, Heppner hosted Weston-McEwen during the Mustangs’ Dig
Pink night.
The Dig Pink night was organized by Hailey Wenberg as part of her senior project.
This included an auction of baked goods that brought in a total of $2,215 to go towards
a cancer charity of Hailey’s choosing.
Thursday night’s game was fast-paced. Unfortunately, the Mustangs could not
keep up with the TigerScots. The girls played their hearts out, never giving up, but just
couldn’t get the points they needed to win.
“Weston showed up and played well tonight. We struggled all the way around and
just could not capitalize when we needed to. It’s been a long homecoming week for the
girls, so we’re going to take advantage of our free weekend and regroup on Monday,”
said coach Wilson.

Heppner volleyball overtakes
Irrigon in five games

On Tuesday, Oct. 4, the Heppner Mustangs traveled to battle the Irrigon Knights.
Heppner was taken by surprise this time around, as Coach Wilson described Irrigon
as a “whole new team” that showed up for the match compared to the Knights the
Mustangs played last week.
“It took everything we had to pull out this win,” said Wilson. “We battled them
for each point. It was a great match-up tonight.”

Mustang Football
Heppner Mustangs have
had a good start to the 2022
season with a 3-2. Playing
Toledo at home for a season
opening win of 48-8. Then
we traveled across the state
to Warrington and lost 0-28.
Week three brought a win
against Irrigon with a score
of 46-6, bringing us to week
four, where we traveled to
Lost River and suffered a
loss 6-31. On Friday, Sep-
tember 3rd we had a win
over Stanfield 34-6. - Lane

Cross Country
The Heppner Mustangs
Cross Country Team has
had a great start this year.
They’ve had 5 Cross Coun-
try meets. Which took place
in Pilot Rock, Tillamook,
Umatilla, Wallowa Lake,
Hermiston, and Stanfield.
They are placed 3rd in the
district. They have had
some great finishes so far.
The Pilot Rock race was
a memorial race for John
Hascall. In the Tillamook
race, high school boys
placed 8th overall. In the
Umatilla race, high school
girls placed 2nd and the
high school boys placed
11th overall. In the Wal-
lowa race, high school girls
placed 4th and the high
school boys placed 3rd
overall. In the Stanfield
race high school girls and
boys both placed 3rd. We
are looking forward to the
meets ahead. - Saige Jensen
Volleyball
The Heppner Mustang vol-
leyball team has had a busy
season so far playing over
15 different teams. They
just started their league
season off with a close loss
against Stanfield on Thurs-
day, September 22. They’re
overall record is 11-6 and
their league record is 0-1.
The team will be playing
more games throughout
October and hopefully into

Cheer Team
Our Heppner cheer team
has been extremely sup-
portive at all of our home
football games this year.
They have been getting up
at 6 a.m. every morning to
practice old and new cheers
for many hard hours. They
have also been learning
halftime dances one on top
of the other and they are
putting on a new mix of
dances with some of the
senior boys for homecom-
ing week. They have been
a very cooperative and
flexible team and they are
very excited to continue
on with the year of full of

The Heppner Mustang
football team remained
undefeated in Blue Moun-
tain Conference play with
a 14-6 victory over the
Weston-McEwen/Griswold
TigerScots.
The game started with
the Mustangs fumbling the
ball on their very first play.
The next time Heppner got
the ball they went on an 11-
play, 52-yard drive that end-
ed with another fumble at
the TigerScot 14-yard line.
The Heppner defense forced
a punt and then the offense
started a scoring drive. The
seven-play, 60-yard drive
ended when Landon Mitch-
ell completed a 20-yard
pass to Cameron Proudfoot
for a touchdown to make
the score 6-0 as the second
quarter started.
A long TigerScot drive
that ate up about half of the
time in the second quarter
ended when Mitchell ripped
the ball from their running
back and ran 56 yards the
other way. The Mustangs
started a drive that would
end two plays later when
Mitchell ran the ball in from
25 yards out for a touch-
down. Ty Boor punched in
the two-point conversion to
make the score 14-0.
The TigerScots would
score on their next posses-
sion to make the score of
the game 14-6. Heppner
lost the ball on their next
possession, but the defense
stepped up and got the ball
right back for the offense.
The Mustangs drove the
ball down the field all the
way to the six-yard line
but failed to score on the
very last play of the half.
The score of the game at
halftime was 14-6.
The teams traded
several possessions in the
third quarter. The Mustangs
intercepted a TigerScot
pass on the first play of the
fourth quarter to give the
Heppner offense the ball
back. Just three plays later
the Heppner team fumbled
to give the ball right back.
The TigerScots then went
on a long seven-play, 46-
yard drive that reached the
Mustang 15-yard line when
Heppner intercepted a pass
to give the Mustangs the
ball again.
Heppner was forced
to punt the ball back to the
TigerScot offense, but the
stingy Mustang defense
held them on downs and
took back possession of the
ball with just over five min-
utes left in the game. The
Mustangs got a first down
and with some good clock
management was able to
run the time out and win the
game by the score of 14-6.
The game was as close
as the score indicates. Hep-
pner had 13 first downs and
the TigerScots 14. Heppner
had 263 total yards to 264
for the TigerScots. The
Mustangs had a big night
on the ground as they ran
the ball for 236 yards and
passed it for 27.
Turnovers were big
in the game as Heppner
fumbled the ball five times
and lost four of them. The
TigerScots fumbled three
times and lost two of them,
and they also threw two
interceptions.
Leading the Mustangs
in rushing was George with
102 yards on 12 carries.
Mitchell had 96 yards and a
touchdown on 23 attempts.
Hayden McMahon rushed
for 36 yards, and Proudfoot
for 13.
Mitchell was 2-8 pass-
ing the ball for 27 yards and
a touchdown. Proudfoot
caught the ball one time for
20 yards and a touchdown,
and Jake Lentz had a catch
for a seven-yard gain.
On the defensive side
of the ball, Boor led the
team with 12 tackles and
George was next with nine.
With eight tackles each
were Lentz and Jaime Ca-
van. Cade Cunningham
was big on the night with
seven, and Tucker Ashbeck
finished with six. Mitchell
had four tackles and with
three tackles each were
Proudfoot, David Cribbs
and Ryan Haugen.
Heppner will travel
to Boardman to take on the
Pirates this Thursday night
at 7 p.m.
