Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, September 7, 2022 -- THREE
Mustangs start season with 46-6 win over Toledo Boomers.
Caden George #24 hands off to Ty Boor #28
The Heppner Mustang
football team started
their 2022 season with a
46-6 win over the Toledo
Boomers. The Mustangs
scored early and often in
their first outing of the
season and the result of the
game was never in doubt.
Heppner received the ball
to start the game and drove
it right down the field for
the games first touchdown.
Quarterback Landon Mitch-
ell led the drive that finished
with a score when he ran
the ball in from 23 yards
out. Mitchell then passed
to David Cribbs for the 2
pt. conversion to make the
score 8-0 only three min-
utes into the game.
The next Mustang score
came as Mitchell threw

a 37 yard touchdown
pass to Cribbs. The 2 pt.
conversion was successful
when Hayden McMahon
ran the ball in to make the
score 16-0.
Heppner found the end
zone again in the first
quarter as Mitchell handed
the ball off to McMahon and
the speedy back scampered
around left end untouched
for a 43 yard touchdown.
Mitchell scored the 2 pt.
conversion to make the
score 24-0 at the end of the
first quarter.
Mitchell then intercepted
a Boomer pass and returned
it to the 1 yard line. On the
very next play, Mitchell
called his own number and
blasted through the line
for the score. Cameron
Proudfoot ran the ball in
for the 2 pt. conversion to
now make the score 32-0
at the half.
The Mustangs kicked off to
start the second half and the
Boomers fumbled the ball
at their own 20 yard line.
Two plays later Heppner
scored again when Caden
George ran the ball in from
4 yards out. Mitchell passed
the ball to Cribbs for the 2
pt. conversion to now make
the score 40-0 just a minute
into the second half.
The teams traded several
possessions and the Heppner
coaches rotated many of the
younger players into the
game. The Boomers scored
early in the fourth quarter
to make it a 40-6 game.
The final Mustang score
came late in the game as
quarterback Jackson Coiner
handed the ball off to Zack
Brown and he ran it in for
a 7 yard touchdown. That
made the final score of the
game 46-6.
The Mustangs amassed
338 total yards in the game,
with 263 of those coming
on the ground. McMahon
led the team in rushing
with 82 yards on 5 carries.
Mitchell ran for 68 yards
and Saul Lopez had 41.
Brown carried the ball for
32 yards and Aden Lathrop
rushed for 24. George
recorded 17 yards on the
ground and Proudfoot, Ty
Boor, Nick Wenberg and
Joseph Albitre each had 3
rushing yards.
Mitchell passed the ball
for 75 yards on just 3
completions. Cribbs
caught a 37 yard pass
and Proudfoot was on the
receiving end of a 35 yard
completion. Lopez caught
1 pass for a 3 yard gain.
On the defensive side of
the ball, Jaime Cavan led
the team with 10 tackles.
Cade Cunningham fol-
lowed with a total of 9 and
George had 6. With 5 tack-
les each were Lopez and
Boor. Proudfoot recorded
3 and with 2 tackles each
were Mitchell, Cribbs,
Chase Jones, Paul Lind-
say, Conor Wilson, Mason
Orem, Karver Wilkins
and Landon McMahon.
With 1 tackle recorded
in the game were Lath-
rop, Brown, Albitre, Jake
Lentz, Ryan Haugen and
Tyelor Moore.
The Mustangs next game
is September 9 as they
travel to Warrenton.

Heppner then played St.
Paul High School. This
team is also a 1A team but
ranked near the top at the
6 spot (at the time of this
writing).
During this game, Coach
Wilson says the girls
had an eye-opening ex-
perience with such a
well-rounded, big-hitting
team as St. Paul. Their
team is made of tall and
fundamentally
sound
players. The Lady Bucks
never missed a beat,
which made it hard for
the Mustangs to gain mo-
mentum.
After the first loss, Hep-
pner measured their suc-
cess by meeting goals
made for the follow-
ing two sets. They were

It was an early Saturday
morning start to games that
would fill the entire day.
The Culver varsity volley-
ball team played the first
game and the last game of
the day, meaning they were
around for 12 hours of vol-
leyball.
East teams invited to
play this weekend were
Weston-McEwen
and
Grant Union, alongside
Heppner. West teams in-
vited to play were Culver,
Kennedy, and Vernonia.
Heppner played against
three good teams this
weekend, only losing one
match and winning two.
The team was able to get
some quality touches in
and is still smoothing out
the wrinkles in their line-
up, but the Coach knows
that is what pre-season
matches are for.
The first game for Heppner
vs. Culver was the match
to watch. Before this
weekend, Culver was un-
ranked since this was their
first weekend to play.
They were an intense,
hard-hitting team with no
lack of height. It was good
to see our Mustangs work-
ing hard to keep the scor-
ing relatively even. Cul-
ver finished the weekend
ranked at #2 for OSAA.
Heppner is ranked #18 af-
ter this weekend.

It was a quick morning as
the teams were playing
ahead of schedule. The JV
team got plenty of playing
time since there were no
subs on the bench. Once
the games were finished,
the floaters moved onto the
varsity bench and finished
out the day at the high
school.
