Spiritually Speaking
DISCIPLESHIP IS HUMBLING ONESELF
This coming Sunday, we turn our attention to a very
important Christian virtue: humility. It is an attribute of
God that all His children must strive
to possess and live. We are called to
imitate the humility of Jesus, who is
the mediator of the new covenant.
Humility was a distinctive mark of the
life and ministry of Jesus. So it must
Fr. Thankachan also be for us as Christians. The author
Joseph
of the Book of Sirach also reminds us
that pride is a disease. However, the
good news is that it can be cured through the imitation
of Christ’s humility. The Scripture readings will help us
to reflect on the discipleship theme again, as humbling
oneself.
Generally, people try to impress others through their
outward appearances. We want to be noticed by others
through our status; and in stark contrast with this attitude
that is very much prevalent in the world today is the teach-
ing of the first reading from the Book of Sirach (3:17–20,
28–29). The author tells us that what is important and of
real significance is our inner attitudes, and that our inner
attitudes should inspire our outward conduct. To put this
in context, we need to address in all honesty: All that I
have, all that I own, all that I am, is it mine? Where have
I gotten it from? Unless we realize and acknowledge that
all that I have are gifts from God, that I have nothing of
my own to boast about, that all is given to me by God
above, I am lost and doomed.
The Lord Jesus Christ gave us this virtue of humility
at the Last Supper. The Gospel of John, chapter 13, is a
beautiful example of the virtue of humility for us to im-
itate. Jesus got up from the dining table and went down
to the feet of His disciples and washed them, leaving us
an example to imitate. This teaching comes to us in the
context of a meal. As we have heard in the Gospel, “Jesus
went to dine at the house of a ruler….” A meal is always
shared in an atmosphere of fellowship. We do not invite
strangers to share a meal with us. Colleagues we might
meet in a restaurant over a cup of tea. But people who are
dear to us are invited to a meal. And we prepare for the
meal. The house is cleaned, a special menu is prepared,
special dishes are cooked. And all this is done because
the person is dear to us. And what we share at the table
is not just food, but a sharing of our inner selves. And so,
what Jesus is sharing with the people who were present
for the meal is a significant teaching. This shows us that
humility is of importance in the Kingdom.
The Gospel of Luke, too, deals with the same topic (Lk.
14:1, 7-14). Jesus describes the virtue of humility through
the parable of the wedding guests invited to a wedding
banquet. Humility cannot be manipulated or earned.
When the man at the banquet goes to sit at the lower place
in true humility, he is invited to move higher up. But
imagine if he had gone to sit in the lower place thinking,
“If I sit here, the host will invite me to go higher up.” If the
host does not do so, the person becomes bitter and curses
the host because his manipulation and false humility
have been exposed and have not served his purpose.
Jesus says in the second parable to not invite people so
that they might invite you back, or repay you in some way.
When you invite someone to dinner, invite the poor who
will not be able to pay you back. Do it out of true love.
True humility comes from our acceptance of God, and
this, in turn, depends on our acceptance of our neighbor.
When we truly accept others as they are, we truly accept
ourselves because the other is not a threat to us. And
the other will not be a threat to us only when we accept
that we are fully dependent on God. The example of true
humility is our Blessed Mother, who said to the angel
at the Annunciation, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the
Lord. Be it done to me according to your word,” an in-
vitation to us to imitate our Blessed Mother and practice
her true humility.
