What a gift commissioner
Doherty has given
the environmental groups
To the Editor:
•
Morrow Coun-
ty Commissioner Jim
Doherty, in his headline
grabbing attempt to make
political hay out of the Port
of Morrow’s nitrate issues
and the subsequent county
declaration of emergency
related to a more than 50-
year old nitrate issue, has
awakened not only every
state regulatory agency,
but the
Environmental Protection
Agency as well. Today it
may only be about the spe-
cific regional aquifer that
everyone will attempt to
regulate, but as with all
government the rest of the
aquifers will need equal
attention soon.
Keep in mind that
the Port of Morrow is not
that much of a contribu-
tor to the overall nitrate
issue.. No doubt with the
large amount of current
and future investment the
Port will make the invest-
ment to
remove nitrates from its
water process. That will
leave agriculture holding
the bag. Most of nitrates
that are being detected
in the aquifer are due to
actions likely taken more
than 50 years ago. Farm-
ing
practices that have already
ended and would be unac-
ceptable today by those of
us involved in farming
and ranching.
What a gift com-
missioner Doherty has
given the environmental
groups and the regulators
in bringing all this nega-
tive attention on Morrow
County. It must have been
very exciting for the 23
State of Oregon agencies
that met with commissioner
Doherty to realize that a ru-
ral conservative agricultural
county
was ready to open its pri-
vate landowners to public
regulation.
Those of us in ag-
riculture in Oregon will
someday be able to name
commissioner Jim Doherty
the self-proclaimed Envi-
ronmental Justice Warrior
that opened the door to the
regulation of nitrates on our
private property.
I encourage every-
one in farming in Oregon
to thank commissioner
Doherty the next time you
see him.

Frontier
cooking
lesson Aug. 27
“Yard Birds In The Grub
Box” will be held August
27 at 11 a.m. at the Heppner
City Park. People are invit-
ed to join the Heritage Mu-
seum in welcoming Debra
Basquez as she shares a live
cooking lesson from the
Frontier using an authentic
Dutch Oven..
In addition to the
lesson, the demonstration
will include “Q & A” and,
of course, sampling.
This will be in the
park so those attending are
asked to please bring your
lawn chairs.
The lesson is made
possible with a “generous
grant from the Morrow
County Recreation Dis-
trict.”
By Doris Brosnan
Sunflowers domi-
nated the flower section at
the fair, and they continue to
dominate parts of the land-
scape along our highways.
They do seem to bring a
smile to the face, maybe
a bit of a lift to the heart?
So, yes, the cake was en-
tered. The cake did not
receive a ribbon. The cake
actually looked like a plate
of pull-aparts. And Nancy
Miller’s looked SO smooth-
ly delicious!
What a great
idea, to invite all Morrow
County Rodeo royalty to
celebrate the 100th anniver-
sary of the rodeo. Almost 70
women who had been on
the rodeo courts agreed to
be in the parade, some on
horseback, some in convey-
ances with wheels. They
later had time to share and
reminisce at a luncheon at
the St. Patrick parish hall
that the rodeo committee
had arranged and extrav-
agantly decorated. They
were definitely treated like
royalty, including free entry
to and introduction at the
rodeos.
The court of 1962
was among those attend-
ees, looking smart in their
matching shirts and scarves,
in the pickup that Claudia
Hughes had decorated for
them, with Merlin Hughes
behind the wheel. Recon-
necting with one anoth-
er and other friends from
past courts: Queen Marlene
Fetsch Currin (Pendleton)
and Jacquie Brindle Myers
(LaGrande), Dianna Petty-
john Hams (Ione), Diana
Fulleton Ball (Heppner).
David and April
Sykes attended their annual
family reunion recently on
the coast. This year it was
in Seaside. All the children
and grandchildren were
there, including daugh-
ter Allison Hayes and her
family, husband, Matt, and
their sons, August and Se-
bastian, from Cary, North
Carolina; son Christopher
Sykes and his wife, Ra-
chel, and their children,
son, Waylon, and daughter,
Sophie, from Pendleton;
daughter Camille Sykes
and Eddie Gonzales with
their son, Oscar, from Mil-
waukie Oregon; and son
Andrew Sykes from Pend-
leton. Some tasty meals
were prepared, including
Chris’s homemade pizza
and Allison’s seafood smor-
gasbord of crabs, clams,
potatoes, and corn laid out
in the middle of the table for
all to partake. The children
were treated to a day at the
large arcade in downtown
Seaside and also made a trip
to the aquarium to feed the
seals. The big annual beach
volleyball tournament was
going on that weekend, so
some of the family spent
time watching the action.
Everyone wrapped up the
week with an evening bon-
fire and tasty s’mores on
the beach.
Come one, come
all: The “Father Condon
Memorial Golf Tourna-
ment” will be this Saturday.
Registration begins at 8 AM
at the Willow Creek Coun-
try Club. More information
is just a call away: Mark
McElligott or Jim Swanson
have the answers to any
questions. Brunch will be
served to all participants,
who will include Bishop
Cary of the Baker diocese.
