leadership conference
Madison Orem, chapter
president of the Ione FFA
Chapter attended the FFA
Washington Leadership
Conference in Washington,
D.C. June 7-12, 2022, with
her advisor, Erin Heideman.
Orem earned a coveted state
scholarship for this oppor-
tunity in 2020 and was able
to use it this year.
The Washington Lead-
ership Conference (WLC)
provides FFA members a
premier leadership experi-
ence while exposing them
to the rich history of Wash-
ington, D.C. WLC is one of
the many ways the National
FFA Organization offers
members exceptional lead-
ership training designed
to serve them for years to
come. The conference helps
guide attendees to become
engaged citizens and make
positive differences in their
communities and beyond.
In addition to the con-
ference, Orem and Heide-
man had the opportunity
to visit the folks at the Na-
tional Association of Wheat
Growers, National Cat-
tlemen’s Association and
Congressmen Cliff Bentz.
“It was a really special ex-
perience and one that has
motivated me to be more
involved and informed
within my community and
my country,” said Orem.
“Being involved in the FFA
program has opened so
many doors for me.”

The Minors Team of
the Columbia Little League
Baseball took the cham-
pionship at the district
playoffs recently played
in Burns, OR. The Minors
Team (8-10 year old) in-
cludes Heppner regular
season players JJ McDan-
iel, Gage Rosenbalm, Car-
ter Adams, Joel Wilson,
Cooper Stefani, Peyton
Matheny, Charlie Mullins,
Lucas Matheny, and Casyn
Adams. The team is man-
aged by Austin Allen and
coached by Brad Adams
and Nate James.
This team opened up
play against the Harney
County all Stars and was
able to defeat them by 10
run mercy rule in the 4 th
inning, winning 11-1.
The second game
brought on a game vs
Hermiston who had the
first round by. In a back and
forth game the Columbia
team was able to pull out
the victory in the bottom of
the 6 th inning with a walk
off, bases loaded, base hit
by Joel Wilson to win 14-
13.
Next game was against
a Baker team that had pre-
viously beaten La Grande.
The first four innings had
Columbia and Baker in a
10-9 game. After some er-
rors and walks, Baker was
able to pull ahead and get
a 25-10 victory. This loss
moved Columbia to the bot-
tom side of the bracket in a

Lamb Weston is an equal opportunity employer
must win situation against
Hermiston, with the winner
advancing to the champion-
ship. To start the game our
bats were on fire. Columbia
jumped out to an early 8-0
lead. Throughout the game
Columbia was able to main-
tain that lead and pull out
the 19-14 victory.
Moving into the Cham-
pionship round to again
face Baker was a success.
The Columbia team, hav-
ing played four games to
Bakers two, had pitching
challenges with rest rules
and just overall fatigue
from a long week. The kids
proved they were ready to
play after the first inning
and the game was tight
with Columbia holding a
4-2 lead. The boys’ bats
continued over the next
couple innings, and they
were able to expand the
lead 7-3. Moving into the
4 th and with some pitching
changes, the kids began
hitting the ball as well as
a 9/10 year old group can
and expanded the lead and
closed out the game 20-8 in
a shortened game.
Being a double elim-
ination bracket, to take
home the District Cham-
pionship the team had to
again face Baker. The kids
were able to grab a quick
sandwich, drink some water
and Gatorade and prepare
for the final game. The
outside temps in the shade
were starting to hit around
the upper 80s to lower 90s
but Columbia once again
showed they were ready
for the moment. As the
visiting team, Columbia
was able to jump out to a
quick 5-0 lead. After the
first inning the game was
5-1. In the second inning
the bats continued, seeing
the kids able to bat through
the entire lineup 1 ½ times
and expanding the lead
to 13-1. After the 3 rd and
top of the 4 th , the score
was 19-3 and Columbia
was three outs away from
winning. They were able to
get the three outs to secure
the Championship. These
championship games fea-
tured some great pitching
from the Columbia teams
as well as some top notch
hitting, including an in the
park grand slam.
The Majors Team (10-
12 year old) is managed by
Mike Haugen and Coached
by Jeromy Wilson and Aar-
on Barnett. Heppner regular
season players representing
the team were Jace Wilson,
Mason Haugen, Camer-
on Barnett, Brody Ogden,
Kord Dikenson and Matt
Wilson. The team had a
couple of difficult match-
ups in the District tourna-
ment. The first matchup was
against Baker Nationals.
In a tight game the score
after five innings was still
1-0, Columbia. Baker tied
it up in the 6 th and ended
up taking the lead in the
7 th . Columbia lost the game
2-1 after seven complete
innings. Day two brought a
matchup against the best of
Harney and Grant counties.
Grant County had a pitcher
who threw extremely well
for a 12 year old and the Co-
lumbia team was only able
to manufacture three hits
for the game and losing 6-0.
Kids come together
from Heppner, Ione, Stan-
field and Echo to make up
the Columbia team. Their
expenses are offset by dona-
tions from local businesses
and companies, as well as
grants. Beginning July 9,
the team will open play in
the state tournament against
District 2 champions in
Turner, OR.
