TWO - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, June 29, 2022 The Official Newspaper of the City of Heppner and the County of Morrow Good News Only Spiritually Speaking Heppner By Doris Brosnan As though on cue, the weather did an amazing switch last week, so, roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer .... Swimming lessons! Baseball All-Stars! Weddings! Farmers Markets! Amazing roses blooming. (Stop and smell them?) Blackbirds buzzing anyone or thing that gets remotely close to their nests. Vacation Bible Schools .... St. Patrick and St. William parish kids attended four days of activity- centered study from June 13 through 16. The theme of the week was "Prayer." Ethan Wood, 2Y2 year-old son of co-planner Laurie Wood, was the youngest attendee to join the preschool set who had ses- sions that rotated among a craft station, a game station, and a station for talking about prayer. The school-aged students had a two-day workshop with visiting priests, and Joe lindsay led a session of mini plays, with teen actors helping. Snack times, music, and mass to end each day were also features. The experience was pos- sible only because of the many adult helpers who were assisted by teenagers. Shirley Connor received good news about not just one but about two granddaughters last week! They are both on their ways to becoming familiar faces to many: Katie Mills, daughter of Shirley's daughter Penny and husband Doug, is featured on a billboard in laGrandel Katie works in the personnel office at the laGrande Hos- pital, and the hospital has chosen Katie for the face of the hospital in a new advertising campaign. At the same time, granddaughter Kenlie Connor, daughter of Shir- ley's son Greg and wife Jodi, appears on an advertising poster at the Reno Rodeo! Kenlie, who lives in Asotin, WA, works in a western store that has created for their advertising campaign the poster that features her. The Kilkenny ranch was an ideal setting last Satur- day evening for the wedding of daughter, "Katie," who looked stunning in her fitted lace gown, and her groom, Thomas Russell. The couple had planned a truly person- al and untraditional ceremony and a continued evening of fun and fine food. What a wonderful surprise for this grandmother on Saturday morning when grandson Conor pulled into the driveway! He had "motored" up from his new location, Corvallis, in his recently purchased used car, to visit a few friends. Grandma was thankful for the bit of time she had with Conor and a bit nervous when he talked her into driving the low-to-the-ground, manual-transmission vehicle built for the younger crowd. Cara Osmin will be one of a group of ten individuals from around Oregon heading for Kenya on Thursday. Led by Rev. Jim Monroe, these volunteers will begin their twenty-plus-hours flight starting in Redmond, Or- egon, will land in Nairobi, and then will travel by bus to the Maua Methodist Hospital, which will serve as their base. For three weeks, the volunteers will go to villag- es to administer an important deworming medication to children, and they will also build a house for a family who has lost the parents. For several years, Monroe has been taking volunteer workers to Kenya, where he and his wife served for three years. This will be Cara's first trip, but a return trip for some of the other volunteers. Covid precluded this trip two years ago, but they were able to begin planning again last fall. Among the prepa- rations have been many vaccinations, and everyone will begin an anti-malaria treatment tomorrow, to be taken daily during their stay and for another three weeks after their return to the states. Updates on the group's activi- ties will be available on Facebook at kenya2022. Here's hoping that some good news comes to every- one reading this! By Fr. Thankachan Joseph This coming Sunday, the Church is calling our at- tention to the mission entrusted to each of us: Every Christian is sent by Christ into the world as a messenger of hope and love. The "world" here means the area in which I live, my place of work, the people whom I meet every day. Ac- tive concern for the world and other people is an essential mark of a good Fr. Thankachan Joseph Christian. The Prophet Isaiah brings the mes- sage of joy and gladness (Is. 66: 10-14). Can you imag- ine the happiness of Christopher Columbus when he dis- covered the new world, as he went about telling friends, acquaintances, and strangers about the new world he had discovered? Can you picture the joy of our founding fathers as they began to realize the dreams of establish- ing a land of the free? And yet, compare the joy of Co- lumbus and the founding fathers to that of the disciples of Christ. They communicated to the World the good news of eternal freedom and the Kingdom of etemallife. In St Paul's Letter to the Galatians (6: 14-18), he is boasting in the cross of Christ, in spite of the hardships he has had. We, too, rejoice in the cross of Christ be- cause it is the sign of God's great love for us and of ours for Him, and we can rejoice in the assurance of eternal life with God. Whn we face difficulties, problems, anx- ieties we often need to be reminded of these words of Paul: "From now on, let no one make troubles for me; for I bear the marks of Jesus on my body" (6:17). The Gospel reading of the day from Luke (10:1-12, 17-20) gives us the goal of discipleship. Luke warns us: If you want to be a disciple of Christ, ready to walk to Jerusalem willingly and freely, no detours are allowed, no vengeance; God loves a cheerful giver. It is very clear what the selected must do for Christ. a) Be determined: "Salute no one on the road" (Lk, 4). That is, do not get distracted from your work and do not miss an opportunity to take Christ into the hearts of people. Robert Schumann's middle fmger became para- lyzed and his future as a pianist seemed at an end. How- ever, he produced beautiful melodies in spite of this tragedy. b) Do not put our trust in human means: "Carry no purse ... " (Lk 10,4). That is, neither money, nor hu- man power, nor human learning is really needed to bring people to Christ. What is really needed is the example of a truly Christian life. The beautiful prayer taught by Jesus to his disciples is a beautiful example: instead of accumulating. try to look out for the daily bread. c) Be messengers of peace and love: "Whatever house you enter, let your first words be, 'Peace to this House!'" (10:5). When the Bible uses the word "peace," it uses it in four different senses: In a military sense - to indicate an absence of war between nations. Thus, we say, "The nations are at peace." In a personal sense - to indicate a feeling of personal well-being. Thus, we say, "We are at peace with ourselves." In a religious sense - to indicate a right relationship between God and ourselves. Thus, we say, "We are at peace with God." And to indicate a state in which everyone on Earth is at peace with God, neighbor, and self. This is what we mean by the "peace of Christ." d) Never lose courage: "When they do not receive you in a place ... go to another" (Lk 10,10). We should never get tired, never lose courage; God wants us to try and try again, just as He does; the person who rejected us yesterday might accept us today. It is not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog that counts. Kites rise not with but against the wind. In George Bernard Shaw's play is a scene in which Saint Joan knows she has been abandoned by the men who should have been her supporters, so she is alone. As she leaves them, she turns and says, "It is better to be alone with God than to listen to jealous little counsels. His friendship will not fail me, nor His counsel, nor His Love. In His strength I will dare and dare and dare until I die."
