Good News Only
By Doris Brosnan
Judging by the ginor-
mous pile of yard debris
and the trailerful of other
castaways, our Heppner
homes must be looking
and feeling tidier in and
out. This opportunity from
the city continues by Riv-
erside Street through next
Monday.
The weather couldn’t
have been more cooperative
last weekend for anyone
wanting to do yard work,
and it seems to be enhanc-
ing the growth of all things
green. Not everyone agrees,
but I find pulling weeds or
clusters of errant grass from
the ground by their roots
totally gratifying.
Five large green spac-
es around our community
offer soothing places to
relax, run, toss balls, etc.,
some with shade, some
with tables and benches, all
well-kept by the city crew.
And, one last note related
to our environment: Have
you taken time to notice
the lush, Crimson Norway
Maples now gracing Main
Street? Beautiful.
Pictures of HHS seniors
also grace Main Street,
banners on the lamp posts.
Hard to peruse while driv-
ing, so they might be worth
our parking and walking
for a good look at these 36
students.

cross the road?” might be
an unanswerable question,
but last weekend, the family
looking for mushrooms and
a future camping spot on
Willow Creek didn’t stick
around to see if they could
discern a reason. The bear
passed closely in front of
their pickup not many min-
utes after they had been on
foot hunting the fungi.
Last Thursday, from
Woodburn, Linda Penland
and her two daughters, Julie
Grosz and Terri Bolman,
visited Liz Jones Puckett.
Liz and Julie had attended
school together in Tigard.
Linda’s husband, Neal, who
passed away two years ago,
lived in Heppner in the 50s,
when his parents, Robert
and Gretchen, owned the
Heppner Gazette Times.
He graduated in the class
of ‘61. Linda reports that
they thoroughly enjoyed
the Heppner visit because
“Liz was so great showing
us around town and taking
us to places that had items
about Neal. I so enjoyed
the museum, especially
that a man in the library
called Peggy Fishburn at
home and she came down
and opened it up for us. I
loved the things about Neal
that we saw in there. Peggy
asked if she could acquire
Neal’s military jacket for
the museum, so I am going
to send her the jacket and
his sweater from Hepper
High.”
Kudos to Carson Bros-
nan, again. He will be a
senior in the ROTC pro-
gram at OSU next year
and has been selected to be
the Marine Midshipmen’s
Commanding Officer.
Kudos to the HHS
tracksters who as a team
placed third in the 2A State
Championships last week-
end in Eugene: Hallee His-
ler, Saige Jensen, Irelynn
Kollman, Arianna Worden,
Trevor Nichols, Hannah
Finch, Joseph Sherman, Ja-
cob Finch, Hayden McMa-
hon, Ed Ellsworth, Conor
Brosnan.
And hats off to the HHS
boys golf, who were happy
to be included in the state
championships last week
in Banks: Cody Fletcher,
David Cribbs, Derek Smith,
Landon Mitchell, and Paul
and John Lindsay.
G-T editor, Bobbi Gor-
don, took a jaunt to St.
George, Utah with two
friends from Redmond,
OR recently. She got a
chance to visit and have
breakfast with her grand-
daughter, Annabelle, on the
way through Ogden. The
tourists visited more big
red rocks than they had ever
seen before while visiting
Zion, Bryce Canyon and the
Valley of Fire. The trio left
Redmond on a Thursday
and returned a week later
on Saturday, traveling and
driving 2,659 miles.
Some positive tidbits
to share after this coming
weekend of remember-
ing deceased loved ones
as we decorate their rest-
ing places. Having good
memories is a gift, some-
times a gift worth sharing:

hoping that some good
news comes to everyone
reading this.
