Celebration of Life
Marvin Way
The Heppner United
Methodist Church will
host Stanley Gitari, a reg-
istered nurse and commu-
nity health advocate from
a mission hospital in Maua,
Kenya on April 3 at 12:30
p.m. A spokesperson for
the church said, “In a world
torn apart by dissent and
war, it is good to know that
there are people out there
who have dedicated their
lives to making the world a
more caring, loving place.”
Gitari has given almost
40 years of health care and
community development
services to the people of
Maua – most of whom can-
not afford to pay the fees for
the services they need, but
are cared for, nevertheless.
He was born in a neigh-
boring village and did not
start school until he was
nine – and that was pre-
school. But he went on to
receive his primary and
secondary education in
the region. After he grad-
uated from high school he
attended nursing school at
the Maua Methodist Hos-
pital’s School of Nursing,
receiving the equivalent of
a certificate as a Licensed
Practical Nurse. Following
his graduation from the
school in Maua, he was
granted, along with his wife
Mary (also a nurse), a full
scholarship to Oklahoma
City University, in Oklaho-
ma City. There he received
a BS in nursing and became
a registered nurse.
He returned to Maua
Methodist Hospital, turning
down a number of lucrative
offers for nursing positions
in both the US and Kenya.
He went on to receive a
master’s degree in public
health from the University
of Ghana. For years he has
directed the community
outreach programs for the
Maua Methodist Hospital,
creating programs, many of
which are considered model
programs for Sub-Sahara
Africa. He has consistent-
ly refused positions with
greater pay and benefits in
order to help the people of
the community in which he
grew up. So many people
can’t wait to leave for “the
big city.” Stanley couldn’t
wait to stay put and help his
friends and neighbors.
The Heppner Unit-
ed Methodist Church is
sending two of its own,
Cara Osmin and Rev. Jim
Monroe, to Maua, Kenya
in early July to work with
these various programs.
Stanley Gitari is coming to
Heppner to share the work
that has been so vital in his
career, and so essential to
the people of Kenya.
