EIGHT - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, January 12, 2022 Heppner Mustangs begin league basketball competition By Blake Carter Basketball seasons are often broken down into three, “stages,” across the season. Stage one begins with non-conference com- petition, a so-called war- mup for the rest of the season. Stage two brings what most people consider the most important, league play. Oftentimes teams’ performances and placings in league play determine what their postseason will look like. The postseason, which includes district tour- naments, state playoffs and ultimately the state tourna- ment, create stage three of team’s seasons. Heppner currently sits in stage two, as this past week they com- peted in their first league matchups. After a postpone- ment due to weather con- cerns, Heppner was forced to reschedule a matchup with Weston-McEwen. Heppner would proceed to host the Union Bobcats, before hitting the road on their way to a matchup with Grant Union. Friday afternoon was a big day for both the girls’ and boys’ varsity teams. Union is currently ranked 11 th in boys’ varsity, and 12 th in girls’ varsity. These contests again provided major insight into some of the top teams in the con- ference. The girls had an incredibly tough matchup as Union is led by senior Callie Glenn. Glenn has been a major contributor for Union since she was a freshman when she started on the fifth-place team back in 2020. The Bobcats took down the Mustangs 42-17. Union was pesky on the defensive end of the floor; they were active in the pass- ing lanes and created a lot of Mustang turnovers. This was evident as the Bobcats outscored the Mustangs 15-2 in the first quarter. Heppner bounced back in the second quarter, holding Union to just six points, but Heppner couldn’t pro- duce any points themselves. Union continued to ride the momentum in the first half as they looked dominant in the victory. The boys team con- trolled the game from the tip, as a late third quarter surge wasn’t enough in the Mustangs 66-51 victory. Heppner once again gained an early lead, scoring 21 points in the first quarter. They followed that up with 19 in the second quarter. However, on the other side the Bobcats were doing what they could against a stingy Mustang defense. Union fell behind early and entered the half down 40- 25. Union came out of the gates strong in the second half, using their size to at- tempt to bully the Mustangs down low. The Bobcats were able to cut the lead down in the second half, getting as close as eight points. However, the Mus- tangs dominated the paint to keep Union down. Union still found themselves down 12 points at the end of the third quarter. In the final period Heppner would push their lead back out, as their defense held the Bobcats to nine points to finish out the game. The Mustangs saw four players score double digits across the game, in- cluding a team high 17 from Kason Cimmiyotti. Boys’ stats vs Union: Tucker Ashbeck, 10 points, seven rebounds, two steals, David Cribbs, nine points, one assist, six rebounds; Caden George, two points, one assist, two rebounds; Landon Mitchell, 11 points, four rebounds, one steal; Kason Cimmiyotti, 17 points, three rebounds, one steal, one block; Brock Hisler, 12 points, three assists, nine rebounds; Joe Sherman, five points, two assists, six rebounds. Saturday Heppner trav- eled to one of the tough- est, if not the toughest, gym to play in within the Blue Mountain Conference. Grant Union has always been very good at protect- ing their home floor, some- thing that many teams have in mind when they travel to John Day. The Lady Mustangs lost a heartbreaker in a 45-44 defeat. The contest continued to swing back and forth all night long, Heppner would hold a lead, but it would quickly switch hands. The Mustangs were able to hold a 23-20 advan- tage headed into halftime, this lead would quickly diminish in the third quar- ter as the Prospectors used a 10-5 quarter to grab the lead right back 30-28. After a back-and-forth quarter, Heppner found themselves down 43-41 with less than ten seconds remaining. Unfortunately, two made free throws from the Pros- pectors would push the lead back out to four. A buzzer beating three wouldn’t be enough as the Mustangs fell by a single point. ZaBrena Masterson led the way for Heppner with 16 points, as Hailey Wenberg contribut- ed 12. Girls’ stats vs GU; Han- nah Finch, eight points, one rebound, two steals; Zandra Masterson, eight points, three rebounds, one steal; Hadlie Nation, three re- bounds, three steals; Brook Wilson, three rebounds, two steals; ZaBrena Masterson, 16 points, four rebounds, three steals; Hallee Hisler, three rebounds, two steals; Hailey Wenberg, 12 points, seven rebounds; Kadie Henrichs, one rebound. The Mustang boys showed no signs of slow- ing down in a 68-37 beat down of Grant Union. Heppner was able to find quick points in transition, as their defense quieted the Prospector attack. The Mustangs grabbed an early seven-point first quarter lead, before using a 20-9 second quarter to extend the lead out to 35-17 at halftime. The second half only grew the Mustang lead as they outscored the Pros- pectors 33-20 and cruised to the win. Kason Cimmi- yotti scored a game high 13 points for the Mustangs. Boys stats vs GU; Tucker Ashbeck, eight points, two rebounds; Da- vid Cribbs, nine points, three assists, one rebound, two blocks; Trevor Nichols, four points; Caden George, 12 points, one steal; Landon Mitchell, two rebounds, one steal; Cameron Proud- foot, two points, one re- bound; Derrick Smith, three points; Kason Cimmiyotti, 13 points, one rebound; Brock Hisler, nine points, four assists, two rebounds, one steal; Joe Sherman, six points, one assist, one rebound, three steals; Brian Lindsay, two points. After a tough week- end of competition Hep- pner will once again be right back at it, as they head to Pilot Rock on Fri- day, December 14. Games begin at 3 p.m. with the JV girls’ teams. Heppner closes out the weekend on their home court as they host the Stanfield Tigers where games begin at 1 p.m. Heppner has also re- scheduled their matchup with Weston-McEwen to Tuesday, January 18, in Heppner. These contests will begin at 3 p.m. at the high school. Nabb crossbred black/white and tan dog with a blue collar at his residence. Pet rescue has the dog.
