Local Christmas events return this year

The Heppner Chamber
of Commerce, along with
area businesses and church-
es, will be holding events
almost daily for the Christ-
mas season this year. Many
events were cancelled or
held virtually last year due
to COVID. Events begin
this week with a painting
party at the Heppner Chris-
tian Church on December 9
at 7 p.m.
Kicking off this week-
end will be an Artifactory
Bazaar sponsored by Hep-
pner Daycare at the Gilliam
and Bisbee building on
December 11 from 9 a.m. to
1 p.m. Then on Sunday, De-
cember 12 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Pioneer Memorial Home
Health and Hospice will
sponsor a scavenger hunt
“Searching for Christ in
Christmas.” Local churches
participating in the scaven-
ger hunt include Hopeful
Saints Ministry, Heppner
Christian Church, Heppner
Seventh-Day Adventist,
Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-Day Saints and St.
Patrick Catholic Church.

Flood Town Books will
be hosting Christmas Trivia
Night on Facebook Live or
in the store at 7 p.m. De-
cember 13 and their Merry
Ione/Arlington hosts
basketball tournament

The Ione/Arlington
boys’ basketball team won
the Ione Basketball Bo-
nanza Tournament held In
Ione December 3 rd and 4 th .
The Ione/Arlington teams
hosted both boys and girls
JV and Varsity teams from
Irrigon, Spray/Mitchell/
Wheeler and Damascus
Christian.
The Ione/Arlington
boys won the champion-
ship game versus Irrigon
after taking the win against
Damascus Christian on
Friday. The girls won the
consolation side after a loss
to Damascus Christian the
first day and a win against
Spray/Mitchell/Wheeler the
next day.
Grinchmas party from 5
to 7 p.m. on December
14. Murray Drug’s annual
wine and design event will
be held December 15 at 6
p.m. Thursday, December
16 is the night to redeem
rewards cards, enjoy the all
ages coloring contest, meet
Santa and Mrs. Claus and
pick up some treats from the
Parent-Teacher Club bake
sale at the chamber spon-
sored Celebrate Heppner
Christmas event from 6 to
9 p.m. at the fairgrounds.
The next weekend
brings The Polar Express
at the Sage Clothing event
center on Friday, De-
cember 17, sponsored by
Ione Arlington Winter Sports Schedule
Sage Clothing, Breaking
Grounds Coffee and Wheat-
land Insurance. Saturday,
December 18 will be a busy
day with the Christmas
Light parade at 6 p.m. and a
snowball drop at Thomson
Square at 7:30, sponsored
by the Heppner Outreach
Council. A dedication cere-
mony for Thomson Square
will also be held Saturday,
with Mexican hot chocolate
served by Tacos Home-
town.
The all-ages coloring
contest requires coloring
pages to be picked up and
returned to the chamber
office by December 13,
with judging and winners
announced at the Celebrate
Heppner Christmas event.
The winners will win art
supplies provided by TREO
and Wilkinson Ranches.
Residents within the
city limits of Heppner are
encouraged to decorate
their homes and enter the
Christmas Decorating con-
test, where three winners
will win prizes provided by
Ellsworth Real Estate Fund
LLC. Categories include
a traditional display, the
Clark Griswold excessive
use of everything display
and a crazy inflatables dis-
play, with a minimum of
three inflatables required.
Residents must submit their
names and addresses to the
chamber office by Decem-
ber 13 and judging will take
place December 14.
“This year’s Christmas
events will look different
than it did pre COVID, but
so does everything these
days,” Chamber Executive
Director JoAnna Lamb told
the Gazette. “The Christmas
Committee really tried hard
to reach out to the whole
community. Everyone that
had an idea and wanted
to do something, has been
included. We have added
in some new programs, and
we are experimenting with
those to see what we can
expand on for next year,”
she added.
